Several students have opposed the decision of Maharashtra State University of Health Sciences (MUHS) to conduct final-year examinations for the BDS course from August 4, 2020 during the ongoing pandemic.
A parent of a BDS student, who hails from Kinwat taluka in Nanded district and studies in a Nashik-based college said MUHS should have postponed the exams.
"Although almost every other test in the world has been delayed, the authorities here are on the verge of conducting the BDS. I fear for the safety of my family," he said.
Many students and parents have found out that several medical colleges attached to hospitals are treating Covid-19.
"Educational institutions, where the exams are scheduled, are not free. Also, many students live in Covid-19 hotspots will appear for the exams, rendering students susceptible to transmission of infections," said another parent.
Outstation students and parents have addressed significant issues related to transportation, food quality and lodging.
Ashok Belkhode, an expert (health) member of the Marathwada Development Board, said that the authorities must not put the lives of students at risk.
"Students are not in the best state of mind to appear for the test. The authorities will postpone the test," he said.
Belkhode also reported that the university will postpone the admission process to the BDS PG courses due in September 2020.
Deelip Mhaisekar, Vice-Chancellor of MUHS, said that a group of students would like the test to take place on August 4, 2020.
"The exams have now been postponed by more than four months. Students who support and oppose them have requested judicial interference. A decision must be made very early," he said.
