Mumbai University Finding Ways to Work Around Coronavirus, Yet to take Final Call on ATKT

Mumbai is one of the worst-hit cities in India by the coronavirus pandemic, with 23,000 active cases. Schools and colleges are finding it difficult to function smoothly. But Mumbai University is constantly finding ways to work around the situation, from the possibility of shifting to a quarter online classes to cancelling examinations.

Earlier, the university had successfully conducted its first online viva for an engineering student.

Mumbai University may follow the order of the State to cancel the final year examination due to the rising number of coronavirus cases and the consequent delay in the academic calendar. The Maharashtra State Education Department had cited high health risks to argue that examinations should not be held.

According to the State Minister for Higher Education, examinations for all degree and postgraduate courses for the 14 universities in Maharashtra will be optional, including Mumbai University.

The marking scheme for the results after the examinations are cancelled will follow a 50:50 pattern. The final marks will be given after considering the average of previous performances and internal assessments. Students who are not satisfied with the marking scheme can ask for optional examinations.

Mumbai University has more than 73,000 students with ATKT (Allowed to Keep Terms) out of 203,000 students. Though the state government has left the final evaluation call with the university, Mumbai University is yet to come out with an unequivocal statement. The students are waiting for the final assessment as the academic year is set to begin.
