Odisha: Candidates face Obstacles in Taking up JEE Main/NEET in Regional Languages Due to Lack of Study Material & Coaching in Odia; Read Full Story


The decision of the Center to conduct JEE (Main)-2021 in regional languages after NEET received a mixed response in Odisha, as some feel it may help students who have completed their schooling in Odia medium or under the state board, while others feel it will be of little help.

Although JEE Main/NEET is now allowed in Odia, students said that a higher secondary science course is being taught in the state in English and there is hardly any textbook, study material or coaching centre that offers coaching at the national level for entrance tests in Odia, which remain the main difficulties for applicants.

"Initially, we're struggling a lot to get along with the new medium once we join higher secondary. The textbooks in plus two are also in English, so writing the entrance exam in Odia doesn't help much. However it will help those who have completed schooling in Odia medium to better understand the issues," said Sameer Sethi, a JEE candidate and BJB Higher Secondary School student.

Due to the reasons and difficulties mentioned above, there are a few participants for the NEET exam in the Odia language. Out of a total of 800 unrecognised students registered for NEET-2020 in the Odia language, 657 candidates were tested in the regional language, 237 of whom were qualified with a pass percentage of 36%.

"The appearance of the entrance exam in the language of Odia may not be of great help to students, because they will ultimately have to take technical courses in the medium of English and not in the regional languages. The preparation of study materials for entrance examinations is difficult, as there are no experts who are competent in both the subject and the language," said Janmejay Mandal, senior faculty at the Vidwan Coaching Centre.

If we allow students to take part in the entrance examinations, we need to develop quality study materials in the Odia language. Coaching centres are minting students' money and promoting rote learning, and the quality of teaching has also decreased in higher secondary schools, making the whole process more complicated than providing some solution. Making and implementing policies are very different."

Language teachers, however, pointed out that a level playing field would be created for students passing through regional medium-sized schools. "As such students have gone out of Odia medium schools, they feel less confident. Although their concept is clear, they cannot express themselves well in English and do not score well. Allowing them to take the exam in regional languages will provide them with a level playing field," said Debendra Pati, Odia teacher at DAV Public School, CHandraseharpur.
