Students Alleged Discrepancy in TISS Admission Process; Scores in favor of online PI candidates

The students of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai have alleged errors in the marking scheme of the admission process, for which the students have written to the institute.

TISS admission error

TISS allocates 60% weightage to TISSNET and the remaining 40% to the personal interview conducted. However, candidates have alleged that their final marks were not adherent to the weightage of TISSNET and personal interview scores.

Candidates pointed out that candidates who appeared for in-person interviews held in March have scored lower as compared to candidates who appeared for online interviews.

One of the candidates said, "The scores appear skewed in favor of those who appeared for the online interviews."

The Progressive Students Forum (PSF), a student organization at TISS has written on behalf of the candidates and has demanded transparency in the admission process. PSF also raised the issue that some candidates belonging to the general category have been allotted seats in the OBC category.

The letter written by PSF reads, "The institute should make the complete data of candidates public, which should include data points like the total number of candidates applied, no. of candidates appeared and the mode adopted (online/offline PI), their original score, weighted score and the category under which admission is offered."

In clarification to students, the administration of TISS said that there was an error in the marks of the candidates who attended offline interviews. This was however restricted to the MA applied Psychology program (with specialization in clinical and counseling practice), offered by the School of Human Ecology.

As reported by a senior official, the error will be rectified by TISS and final marks will be revised for such candidates. Also, the entire marking scheme and software for all the courses have been verified by the institute and they did not find any such error.
