Students keep Multiple Options Open for UG Admission Due to Uncertainties Raised by COVID-19

This year, students seeking admission to undergraduate colleges keep multiple options open because of the uncertainties that arise as a result of the pandemic. Many of the students who have already applied for Delhi University (DU)-affiliated colleges also have their names in the cut-off lists of leading colleges here. Some of them were even admitted to colleges outside the Northeast. All decisions will depend on the list of DU cut-offs.

Aditi Bagaria has passed the CBSE Class XII Flying Color Boards and its name is shown in the Cotton University (CU) list for admission to BA. Although the dates of admission have yet to be announced, Aditi said that she will be admitted to CU first and then decide to join Delhi University(DU) later.

Although her decision may block the CU's seat until the DU's admissions are held, Aditi said she's keeping her options open. "Since more students have scored more than 95% this year, we know that cuts are going to escalate all over the place. We applied here in Guwahati considering the possibility of higher cuts in Delhi and uncertainty due to Covid-19, "said Aditi, who scored 97.5 per cent.

Some students have also made online admissions to cities such as Bengaluru and Mumbai, which are preferred destinations for NE students. Tarun Chanda, the father of another aspirant, Rishika Chanda, said his daughter had recently been admitted to Wilson College at Mumbai University. After passing Class XII boards with 94 per cent marks, Rishika wanted to pursue higher studies outside the NE.

"I don't know if my daughter's dream of studying under the DU would be fulfilled, but we wanted her to be more exposed outside the region. As of now, Rishika has been admitted to Wilson College, but will move to DU College if luck favours, "said Chanda, a resident of Biswanath District in northern Assam.

Rishika is 397th in the BA cut-off list of the CU. Although she is likely to be admitted to CU, it is a matter of concern whether Rishika will receive honours on the subject of her choice. "We don't want to risk the careers of our students, and we hope the online classes will soon begin at Wilson," Chanda added.

"Beyond the doubt, the students are in the spot because of the Covid-19 situation. In previous years, we saw that 80% of Assam students who applied for admission to the DU did not apply for colleges in the state. This time, however, 95 per cent of the students applied to both Delhi and Assam. If the situation in COVID improves, they will go to Delhi. They are also in a dilemma because of the possibility of higher cuts in DU colleges," said Ranjan Bikash Borah, an adviser to All Assamese Students' Association, New Delhi.

He added that, since the medical and engineering entrance tests have yet to be carried out, the number of applicants to the General Graduate Colleges has increased, which could lead to an increase in cut-offs.
