Supreme Court to Give Judgement on September 21 for Plea Filed Against NLSIU Bengaluru Decision to Conduct NLAT-2020


The Supreme Court has informed that it will take its decision on September 21st, 2020 for the petition which has challenged the decision of National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, to conduct its separate entrance examination NLAT-2020.

A bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan reserved its order on the plea filed by former NLSIU Bengaluru, vice chancellor Professor R Venkata Rao and a parent of the aspirant.

Earlier on September 11, the apex court gave permission to NLSIU, Bengaluru to hold its separate exam, which was to be held on September 12. However the court had restrained it from announcing the results and admitting any student till the pendency of the plea.

The bench panel led by Justice Ashok Bhushan stated that it is a crucial matter and has urged the vice-chancellor of the university to respond to the plea. The plea filled is termed holding of separate examination as "manifestly arbitrary and illegal decision.”

The plea also highlights the favouritism towards upper class elites who can afford to take the test and ignoring the underprivileged.

The plea further mentioned “Through the impugned notification, the Respondent No. 1 University is in direct violation of the fundamental rights of the students who are desirous of gaining admission into the Respondent University, especially during the current and ongoing Covid-19 Pandemic.”

Earlier, CLAT 2020 was postponed due to the ongoing crisis, following which news was spread that CLAT score will not be accepted by NLSIU. This sudden decision spoilt the planning of many students and left them in the state of fear and confusion.
