In the shadow of the Covid-19 pandemic, some 26% of applicants skipped the UP State Entrance Examination (UPSEE) 2020 organised by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU) on Sunday for admission to various technical institutes in the state.

According to officials, 74 per cent of the 1,6 lakh candidates who had registered for the test had taken the examination.

They said that the pandemic could not have had much impact because there was a drop of only six percentage points compared to last year's 80 per cent attendance.

The examination took place in two shifts in 206 centres —187 in UP and 19 in other parts of the country, such as Chandigarh, Dehradun, Patna, Mumbai, Bhopal, Jaipur, Ranchi, Roorkee, Kolkata and Delhi. Approximately 13,150 examinations were conducted at 18 centres in the city.

Admissions to approximately 596 AKTU affiliated engineering, management and pharmacy colleges will be made on the basis of the UPSEE 2020 scores.

Although elaborate Covid measures were announced, the social distancing standards went up in smoke as students left the Lucknow Exam Centres.

Exposing the lapse, some of the examinations were also seen wearing a mask below their chin and clicking on selfies.

However, UPSEE coordinator Prof. Vineet Kansal said that social distance standards have been followed in all centres that have been sanitised well in advance.

Thermal scanning of candidates and staff was carried out at the entrance.

Kansal said that candidates whose body temperature was found to be above 99.4 had been re-scanned after 15 minutes.

Examinations whose body temperature remained above normal even after 15 minutes were conducted in an insulation room for the examination.

"The OMR sheets were also sanitised using ultraviolet rays — both before they were given to candidates for written answers and after the examination, before they were sent for evaluation," he added.

AKTU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Vinay Pathak said that all nodal officers were connected through Bot. "Personally, I did a surprise inspection at several centres and found the arrangements to be satisfactory," he said.
