With 1273 Patents Chandigarh University Maintains Its Top Private University Position for Straight 3 years in the Field of Research and Innovation


New Delhi: With filing 1273 patents in the field of research and innovation, Chandigarh University, Gharuan, has managed to retain its top position among the Higher Education Institutions for the consecutive 3rd year. 

Despite the pandemic caused by the disastrous COVID 19, the faculty and students of Chandigarh University have managed to work towards and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations. 

As per the information shared by Dr. R S Bawa, Pro-Chancellor of the University, 87 patents were filed by the students of the varsity in 2021 and 68 patents were granted in the year that has gone by. 

Till date, the students and faculty of Chandigarh University have filed 1273 patents. It fills me with pride to note that as many as 683 patents have been published, while 128 patents are in the first examination stage. Apart from this, 120 patents of the university have been approved”, he further added. 

Dr. Bawa also explained with pride that for the last 3 years, the university has been holding the number 1 position among the top private universities of India to file the maximum number of patents and number 3 in terms of the number of patents get published and granted. 

While discussing the patents, Dr Bawa referred to how important it is to ensure proper use of available resources and achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for the purpose of securing the future. Science and technology leading towards research and innovation stand at the very basis of this future. 

In the year 2015, 17 SDGs were set by the UN in view of a secure future and Chandigarh University is constantly striving to achieve these goals. I note with immense pride that more than half of our patents are catering to most of the UN’s SDGs”, he further added in his statement. 

Out of the 1273 patents filed by the varsity, approximately 658 ones are directly aligned with the 10 out of 17 Sustainable Development Goals set by the UN. This way, the university is already progressing successfully in creating a secure and prosperous future for the future generations. As per Dr Bawa, Chandigarh University is also creating the other patents in accordance with the rest of the SDGs.

In addition to providing multiple courses across different streams, the university has been conducting exclusive and extensive research in the areas of Agriculture, IT, Climate Change, Healthcare, Biotech, Pharma, Automation, Environment, Women Empowerment, etc.

Dr. Bawa also informed that the varsity has managed to earmark a budget of Rs 12 crores for the promotion of Research and Innovation in 2022. This is to not cause any hindrance by the economic problems for the scientists and researchers. In a way it ensures smooth functioning of the Research team and their creation of a huge impact on the country and leading to becoming a stand-alone institution. 

Innovation and Entrepreneur Development Cell or IDC and Technology Business Incubator or TBI have been set up by the Indian Government in the university campus. 

The TBI established in the university is one of the top 10 technology business incubators in the country, which provides training to students as well as provides financial assistance in addition to research, development and applications for patent registration”, he further added. 

The university includes 20 laboratories under the research industry collaboration, 30 state of art Research Centres, more than 60 Research Groups and over 800 researchers working on innovative research.
