Which one is better: IIT Kanpur civil, IIT Guwahati or IIT BHU mechanical?

SG

If you are certain about your branch choice, then go for Civil at IIT Kanpur. If you aren’t sure about the branch then choosing IIT Kanpur among these three IITs will be better. In 2021, NIRF ranked IIT Kanpur #6 in the country. Although it’s not easy you can change your branch after a year. But you can’t change your college.

Is it better to study the CSE branch at 2nd generation IIT like Patna, Bhubaneswar, or prefer mechanical engineering at Roorkee, Guwahati, or Kharagpur?

AS

B.Tech Computer Science Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Patna (2021)

Infrastructure isn’t a key parameter for CSE. So, if you are interested in pursuing Computer Science, you can consider 2nd generation IITs like Patna, and Bhubaneswar. The quality of academics won’t vary much compared to older IITs.

For CSE, what matters more is your knowledge and skills, rather institute name. If you are among the top 10% of your class, you can compete with top rankers from old IITs.

Which college has better placements: IIT BHU vs IIT Guwahati vs DTU?

AS
Akriti Sinha Posted On : February 18th, 2022
B.Tech Computer Engineering, Delhi Technological University

For software or circuital branches, all three of these institutes offer good placement opportunities. But if we compare among the three then IIT BHU and IIT Guwahati beats DTU, in terms of placement average, highest CTC, number of recruiters, number of international offers, etc. For branches like CSE/IT the average CTC offered at IIT BHU, IIT Guwahati, and DTU last year was INR 25 LPA, INR 20 LPA, and INR 11.17 LPA.

For core branches, only top IITs, BITS and some reputed state colleges like Jadavpur University offer decent placement opportunities. So, for core placement, DTU is way behind IIT BHU and Guwahati. DTU brings some good core recruiters but these are very few in number compared to the number of students. So, the competition to get core placements is too high at DTU.

Is IIT Bhubaneswar Civil Engineering better than IIT Guwahati Design?

SJ
Shiivansh Jha Posted On : March 20th, 2023
Dual Degree B.Tech+M.Tech from Indian Institute of Technology, Bhubaneswar (IITBBSR)

In regards to choosing a branch, it's important to note that Civil is generally considered a core branch, while Design is not. It's up to you to determine which branch aligns with your interests. While institutes do matter, the branch you choose matters even more.

  • When it comes to the quality of teaching, the professors in the Civil department at IIT Bhubaneswar are quite good.
  • If you're looking for better campus life and more exposure, IIT Guwahati may be the better choice for you. However, if you're interested in participating in extracurricular activities such as societies and fests, IIT Bhubaneswar may be a better option since there are fewer students. Keep in mind that the sports facilities at IIT Guwahati are superior to those at IIT Bhubaneswar.
  • When it comes to placements, IIT Guwahati's design branch will primarily offer non-core placements. However, at IIT Bhubaneswar, you have a much better chance of getting core placements, with more than 70% of students securing them this year.
  • If you're interested in technical work, IIT Bhubaneswar's Civil branch may be the better choice for you. However, keep in mind that the average package for IIT Guwahati's design branch is likely to be greater than that of IIT Bhubaneswar's Civil branch.

It doesn't make sense to me when people prepare for non-core companies from the very first year. While it's understandable if you don't find your branch interesting after the second or third year, and decide to go for a non-core company and MBA.

Ultimately, both IIT Bhubaneswar Civil Engineering and IIT Guwahati Design have pros and cons, so it is suggested going with the one that interests you the most. Review the curriculum and see which branch excites you. If you're still undecided, choose based on your future plans. If you are still deciding whether to pursue a technical career in the future, then IIT Guwahati's design branch may be the better choice for you. However, if you're interested in a technical career, then IIT Bhubaneswar's Civil branch may be the better option.

How is the mechanical department at IIT Guwahati? How are the placements and the campus life?

PT
Pragya Tripathi Posted On : January 5th, 2023
B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering & Product Design, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (IITG) (Graduated 2018)

The Mechanical Department is one of the departments at IIT Guwahati that is actively involved in research, competitions (robotics, automobile development, etc.), academics, and so on. It is also one of the largest departments in terms of faculty, Ph.D. scholarships, and available equipment. Almost all of the professors are friendly and eager to assist students.

Placements in IIT Guwahati's mechanical engineering department are very good for B.tech students, with 87% of students placed in PSUs and core companies this year. The rest went into software development, analytics, marketing, and research. As of now, this department has never looked more alive. The campus is an undeniable beauty that will provide an unforgettable experience. BTech and BDes students received the highest domestic and international packages, totaling INR 1.2 crore per year and INR 72 LPA, respectively.

What is better for mathematics and computing, IIT Kanpur vs IIT Kharagpur vs IIT Guwahati vs IIT BHU?

AB
Aditi Banerjee Posted On : March 30th, 2023
Lives in Bangalore

If you are interested in CSE but choosing Mathematics and Computing just for the sake of overlapping courses, then trust me you are making the wrong decision. I have seen many CSE branch seekers taking Mathematics and Computer to land CSE-related jobs. Let me tell you frankly, Mathematics and Computing are no substitutes for Computer Science.

If you want to get a deeper understanding of this, go through the Syllabus of Mathematics. You will find most courses that are theoretical, abstract, and purely mathematical and very few courses related to Computer Science. Mathematics at IITs is not everyone’s cup of tea. It is extremely tough, unlike JEE Math.

However, if you are passionate about Mathematics and want to pursue a research career in it, go for it. The courses might include lengthy proofs of Mathematical Induction and set and relation theory. Discuss the curriculum once with students of Mathematics at IIT and then make the final decision. Usually, the coursework in Mathematics and Computing is the same for all the IIT Branches.

To sum it up, if you are planning to take Mathematics and Computers just for the CSE courses, please make a better decision. My best advice would be to go for CSE in a better engineering college like IIT Hyderabad or Indore.

Which is better, ECE at IIT Guwahati or CSE in IIT Bhubaneswar?

AS
Anup Sodhi Posted On : March 20th, 2023
Studied at IIT Guwahati

When choosing between the two, consider proximity and your interests, as both ECE and CSE are good options.

It's important to note that both IIT Guwahati and IIT Bhubaneswar are considered tier-1 Indian engineering colleges. These colleges strive to provide their engineering students with the maximum possible facilities to increase their probability of gauging industry demands and gaining relevant skills.

At such popular Indian engineering colleges, most students choose to either practice computer programming to become computer engineers (earning between 5-50 LPA depending on skills) or become managers in the industry based on luck and personal preference (earning between 5-15 LPA depending on academic credentials from a college). For computer engineering positions, companies are interested in TopCoder and GitHub profiles rather than academic credentials.
