Medical Council of India (MCI) has guidelines that the minimum age of a student must be 17 years as of 31st December of the admission year.
For example, if you have taken admission in 2021, then you must be 17 years old before 31st December 2021.
The highest age limit is similarly 25 years old. Of course, there are age relaxations on the upper limit based on the reservation system. But most of the students would be in the age range of 17-19 years old.
I would say that roughly 30% - 40% of the students are 17 years old and the rest are 18, 19, or 20 years old. The majority of the students are either fresh out of school or 1-year drop students.
My brother has gone to both the US as well as the UK during his MBBS at AIIMS Delhi. The caveat is that the trips are expensive, as expected. So either you can spend it on your own or get a sponsorship from the ICMR research grant.
To get ICMR research funding you need to do some good research on your field and then convince ICMR through some conferences regarding why you need to secure some funding for the project. If they get convinced of the same and your request is approved, you do not need to spend a penny for your trip.
Currently, there are a total of 22 AIIMS in the country which are in various stages of operations out of which 9 are fully operational and most of the others have either started the classes or are partially functioning.
In terms of outstation trips neither AIIMS Delhi nor any of the other AIIMS conduct any such activities for their students officially. The Shimla trip done for freshers of AIIMS Delhi is conducted by the Student Welfare Union of AIIMS Delhi which is a student body. Most of the other AIIMS, as you would know, are new institutes and are still in the process of creating such traditions for their students which AIIMS Delhi, being the oldest of them all, already has. So most of them including mine, AIIMS Jodhpur, currently do not have any such outstation trips planned.
One of my friends is preparing for medical exams and he opposes the idea of scrapping AIIMS UG and JIPMER UG exams. People that this gives them an advantage like: -
However merging the exams have led to the real advantages the students had before which are: -
AIIMS was on the level of engineering entrance exams comparatively NEET is much easier therefore there are lots of students with the same marks fighting for a single spot.
This is very difficult to differentiate, as both of them are hugely notable for Neurosurgery. But like every other institution, they also have their fair share of pros and cons. Let me discuss some facts about both the institutes, analyzing which you can make your final decision.
You can also choose the college favoring your location. North Indians generally opt for AIIMS while South Indians will go for NIMHANS.
Ultimately, it depends on the student’s choice, because both the institutions are equally good. But a university name does not matter, it might give you the first push but after that your training and your work will speak for themselves.
This is a choice that can vary from individual to individual. It is each student’s unique preference of certain things like location, curriculum, alumni, crowd, etc. that influence their choices.
One of my friends cleared both the entrance exams at the same time but opted for AIIMS over NIMHANS, due to its location. Being a North Indian he felt it would be easier to blend in rather than getting accustomed to a new culture, food or place.
Also, he mentioned that the Neurosurgery course will only provide an McH degree and no MS degree. This was also another concern for him and why he in the end went for AIIMS.
Therefore, you should think clearly and point out all the pros and cons of these institutions. Check which one is satisfying all your requirements and then go for it. Both AIIMS and NIMHANS are reputed institutions, graduating from any of them will prove to be great for your career. If you are North Indian go for AIIMS, if South Indian opt for NIMHANS.
If you don’t have any personal preference, choosing MD Gynae at AIIMS Delhi will be better. OBG has good facilities. AIIMS Delhi has excellent monitoring facilities and nursing backup. It witnesses many high-risk pregnancy cases. The department offers services such as minimally invasive surgery, preventive & operative oncology, and general gynecology.
Other than the traditional academics, the department organizes various CMEs, live workshops, and seminars in all fields. OBG-AIIMS is associated with programs such as WHI (Women’s health initiative) program, HRCC (High-Risk Reproduction Centre), and WHO center for research in Reproduction.
A Neurosurgeon earns quite well. If you join as an Assistant Professor, the salary will range from 1-1.2 lakh per month. Whereas a Professor gets around 1.94 lakh per month.
When the 7th commission recommendations are implemented, there will be a considerable hike in the salary of about INR 10,000 to INR 20,000.
Pay/ Allowance | Professor | Additional Professor | Associate Professor | Assistant Professor |
Grand Total | INR 1,94,235 | INR 1,68,785 | INR 1,58,610 | INR 1,20,660 |
Annual Figure | INR 23,30,820 | INR 20,25,420 | INR 19,033,20 | INR 14,47,920 |
These pay structures are applicable to everybody irrespective of his/her specialty. The average salary for a Consultant Neurosurgeon is INR 34,46,424 per year in India, which is 8% lower than the average NIMHANS salary of INR 37,54,023 per year for this job.
Yes it is possible. There are a lot of mediocre students who evolve with time and end up cracking IIT or AIIMS.
Since MD radiology at AIIMS, New Delhi is your target, you will require a rank in top 3-5 to secure a place in MD radiology. It might be the toughest exam but it is not impossible. Try dedicating more time preparing for this, which might give you positive results.
To pursue a Neurosurgery course, both colleges are equally good in their own ways. But AIIMS Delhi should definitely be your first choice.
Here’s why:
Delhi is a very lively city offering various opportunities through numerous national and international conferences conducted here frequently.
CMC Vellore also has a great reputation but AIIMS has an upper hand. The schedule at both places, your residency training is going to be tough. The fees at CMC are much higher than AIIMS and the salary offered at AIIMS is 4 times higher than CMC.
