Admission to a Ph.D. program at IIT Madras depends on a number of factors. The GATE cutoff doesn’t have much weightage in the selection process. For shortlisting, IIT Madras considers the 10th, 12th, graduation, and masters percentile along with your GATE percentile. You need to have a valid GATE score but the required score is lower compared to the M.Tech cutoff.

For selection, more emphasis is placed on your performance in the written test and interview.

There is no minimum benchmark GATE score that is required to do a Ph.D. in IIT Madras. Students just need to clear GATE to make an application for entry into IITs as a Ph.D. scholar.
The points below give a brief overview of the detailed procedure of entrance into IITs for a Ph.D.
  • For doing a Ph.D. in IIT Madras, clearing GATE is not the only criteria. You should have at least 70% marks in 12th class, B.Tech, and M.Tech. If all the conditions are satisfied, you will get a chance to sit for the written test.
  • Once you are shortlisted, you will have to sit for a written test and then go through an interview process. Your performance in these two processes will decide your entry into IIT Madras or not.
  • Over the above criteria, every department in IIT Madras is free to change their own shortlisting criteria anytime or change their process of test or interview as per their will.
Therefore, there is no cut-off set by any department of IIT Madras for the entry of students as Ph.D. scholars in the institute.
