UC International First Year Scholarship

The UC International First Year Scholarship is awarded to meritorious international students starting a bachelor’s program at the University of Canterbury.

Eligibility Criteria

The University of Canterbury seeks to reward academically and socially exceptional international students beginning their undergraduate program at the University of Canterbury. The applicant:

  • Must be a full fee-paying international student
  • Enrolled full-time in first-year of a program
  • Must meet the entry-level qualification for undergraduate admission to the University of Canterbury.
  • Must have completed the admission applications at the university before applying for the scholarship

Also, the following applicants are NOT ELIGIBLE for the UC International First Year Scholarship:

  • Citizens of Australia or New Zealand
  • Permanent Residents of Australia
  • Students with a New Zealand residence class visas

International transfer students from any tertiary institute in New Zealand are not eligible to apply for the program.


Application Process

Applicants for UC International First Year Scholarship require a separate scholarship application that can be made through the university website. The applications are open 8 weeks before the closing date of the scholarship application.

  • Applicants must first complete their applications for admissions to the University of Canterbury
  • Applicants must complete the online scholarship application form.
  • The application deadlines to apply for the UC International First Year Scholarship are:

International students who are studying in New Zealand at that date August 15
International students who are studying overseas at that date October 31
All other international applicants April 15

Selection Process

A maximum of 25 scholarships awarded each academic year. The scholarship is awarded by the Council of the University on the recommendation of the selection committee. The committee comprises of

  • Vice-Chancellor
  • Director of Student Services and Communication
  • Member of the university staff.

The recipients and the amount of scholarship to be received by a candidate are determined based on the following parameters:

  • academic achievements
  • character, leadership potential, extracurricular and community activity interests
  • financial circumstances
  • strategic objectives of the university

If there are fewer scholarship candidates than the scholarship available, fewer awards are made in the year.


Grant Details

Established in 2012, UC International First Year Scholarship recognizes and supports international students with good academic achievements commencing their UG degree program at the University of Canterbury.

A scholarship amount ranging from 10,000 NZD 20,000 NZD is awarded to eligible students. The amount is paid to the recipient's tuition fees account at the time of enrollment.

Terms and Conditions

  • The scholarship is awarded one time only.
  • The scholarship will automatically lapse except under special circumstances if the recipient does not accept the letter of offer within one calendar month.
  • The university reserves the right to publish and announce the names of the recipients who accept the award.
  • Recipients are obligated to participate in university community activities such as student mentoring, acting as university ambassadors, and being involved with university publicity.
  • If a student withdraws from the program after accepting the scholarship it gets canceled and any funds already awarded may be recovered from the student.
  • The continuation of any scholarship is subject to the academic performance and conduct of the student.

The University of Canterbury provides several other international scholarships to study in the USA both at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
