The Eamon Molloy Memorial Scholarship is available for nationals of selected countries from Asia who want to study in New Zealand. The countries eligible include Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, Timor Leste or Vietnam, or Holders of Hong Kong Permanent Identity Cards.

For seeking the consideration for the Eamon Molloy Memorial Scholarship, interested applicants are required to first complete their admissions at the University of Canterbury.

Applicants are required to fill a scholarship form online. The form is available approximately 8 weeks before the application deadline. Applicants must make sure to submit the scholarship application by March 31 11:59 pm (NZT) 


Selection Process

The Selection Committee Awarded the Eamon Molloy Memorial Scholarship consisting of a representative each of Dr. Ngau Boon Keat; the Molloy family; the donors; and the UC Foundation.

The selection criteria for Eamon Molloy Memorial Scholarship are-

  • the academic qualifications,
  • financial need and
  • the personal statement written by the applicant stating his/her short and long term career goals, commitment to society and community, keeping in mind the difference this particular course will bring.

The Committee normally interviews the applicant before making a final decision.


Grant Details

The University of Canterbury, New Zealand offers Eamon Molloy Memorial Scholarship constituted in the year 2010, every year awarding one Asian National. The award was established in honor of Mr. Eamon Molloy, a committed Catholic, who helped many foreign students settle and study in New Zealand during his lifetime.

A scholarship amount of NZD 15,000 which is given to only one undergraduate student, who is willing to or have taken admission in the second, third or fourth year of the course in any stream/field at the University. The award is to be used for tuition fees and compulsory expenses only.

Terms and Conditions

  • Awarded for the first year tuition fees and the compulsory expenses.
  • If the student has already paid the full fees then the scholarship amount will be credited to his/her student fee account opened after reaching New Zealand.
  • Scholarship offer needs to be accepted within one month (normally specified in the offer) failing which may lead to re-allocation to the applicant next in line.
  • Awarded only to nationals from the listed countries for full-time UG courses who have a valid student visa to New Zealand.
  • If the selection committee is not able to find a suitable candidate for the award, the award will not be given that year.
  • Recipient of the Eamon Molloy Memorial Scholarship has to participate in the promotional activities carried out by the university to internationalize its courses and programs.
  • Recipient needs to maintain full-time student- status on campus.
  • Continuation of scholarship is conditional and depends on satisfactory academic progress and adherence to the university’s regulations.

Award can be clubbed with any previously won award if the conditions of previously won award allow the applicant to take up another award. In that case, the applicant needs to disclose this fact to the selection committee which in turn will assess the financial need of the applicant in totality.

The applicants are advised to check with the university website close to two months before their admission closing dates to get the scholarship form in time.
