Did I do the right thing leaving NIT Rourkela and joining BITS Goa, considering the recent article?

All the three campuses of BITS, Pilani have been recognized as the Institutes of Eminence. The Goa campus is no exception and gets all the funds under the MHRD for any such purpose. Getting back to your question of whether your decision was right or wrong varies. Something that may seem correct to you might not give the same feeling to someone else. If you check out the ranks of engineering colleges in India, NIT Rourkela has a better ranking. But that does not mean that BITS Goa is bad. Always remember that there is no such thing as a right or wrong decision. If you have made a certain decision, stick to it and try with all your might to make that work.

Can a lower-middle-class student afford to study in BITS Pilani or Goa?

Yes, a student from a lower-middle-class background can afford to study at BITS Pilani or BITS Goa. There are several provisions of loans and scholarships for every student to afford a course from such a premier institute in India. Banks give educational loans to students even at low-interest rates for students who get chances of studying at premier institutes like BITS. You can study based on the credit given by banks and then repay the bank after their graduation. BITS also offers scholarships based on merit to its students. There are several levels of percentage waiver of tuition fees in BITS, including 25%, 40%, and 75%, depending on the CGPA of a student after a specific semester. BITS Pilani also offers the provision of international scholarships and scholarships from its own alumni. You need to apply to the required application processes for getting any of them during your tenure. Therefore, it is absolutely possible for you to afford a study at institutes like BITS.

Is BITS Goa overrated as an engineering college?

First of all, it is not mentioned as BITS Goa, it’s addressed as BPGC, BITS Pilani, or KK Birla Goa campus. All three campuses of BITS have the same education, same courses, similar leveled faculty team, and the same companies visit the campus to recruit students. Recently, even the placement list is common among the three campuses. Large scale companies visit the campus for placements including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Flipkart, LinkedIn, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and many more. What do IITians think of BITS Goa/Hyderabad?

I have friends from IITs and most of them dont like or enjoy the fact that a private university competes with them in placements, especially the CS branch, and some students of the BITS do get better placements than some of the students at IITs. But they also admit that had there been bad results in the JEE examinations and if they couldn’t get a seat in a good IIT then BITS Pilani or Hyderabad would have been their first choice for the good placements and the brand tag (also top NITs and top IITs). So to conclude I will say that the students of IITs dont like to be compared with them because the IIT tag is at a different level but they don’t deny the fact that BITS is not far behind them.

What are my chances of being offered admission in NIT Trichy or BITS Goa (CSE) in the international quota with a subject sat score of 2390?

BITS Pilani accepts international students who have attempted SAT. To be eligible you will need to appear for the Grade 12 (qualifying) examination, SAT, and SAT subject tests (in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics level 2). 2390 in SAT is a good score and you are likely to get selected for admission. NIT Trichy will be difficult to get especially for CSE. The required cutoff is quite high for NIT Trichy. However, you can still apply for the program and if you are lucky you may get chosen. Generally, it is difficult because NIT Trichy is considered as one of the best NIT’s and it ranks over many IIT’s. You can also go through Google’s “DASA program in India” for admissions in other branches in different NIT’s.

Ques. My board doesn't give aggregate marks for the 12th exam. What marks should I enter for admissions to BITS Goa Campus?

Ans. For CBSE, include PCM and English/Hindi and one additional elective (total five subjects) in your aggregate. For ICSE, include PCM and English in the aggregate. Others should calculate the aggregate marks (or its equivalent) and attach a note explaining the method used by them to calculate the aggregate.

Ques. I have passed 12th exam only. I have not done a BSc. How do you expect me to apply for MSc now at BITS Goa?

Ans. The MSc at BITS, Goa is an Integrated Masters programme. There is no intermediate BSc degree mandatory for admissions to MSc integrated courses. The input qualification and duration is the same as that for a BE program.

Ques. While entering the 12th exam marks in BITS Goa application form, should I include the practical marks also? Can I include 11th and 12th year marks?

Ans. The subject-wise and aggregate marks are to be given for the 12th year examination only. Don't include the 11th year exam marks. For practical marks, use the method used by your board to calculate the subject-wise marks.

Ques. I have applied online for BITS Goa campus. But I made a mistake in entering 12th Marks & preferences. I want to change them. How to do it?

Ans. You were advised to be careful before entering and confirming the data while applying online. If you want to change the preferences later, you will have to log into the admission portal using your credentials and edit your 12th Marks & preferences. Editing has to be done by the applicant only using the online credentials.

Admission:

For admission, one needs to clear the BITSAT exam to get into the three BITS campus in India. Students need to have a min 75% on boards. BITSAT exams had 5 sections namely, Physics Chemistry Maths English & Logical reasoning

Course Curriculum Overview:

I choose MSc Mathematics because I have an interest in mathematics. The course curriculum is very well designed, and students here are allowed to make their own timetable and choose their professors. Faculty are approachable and are always ready if anyone is interested in research

Review of BITS Pilani Goa Campus

We had to write BITSAT to get through, I scored 296/450 and the cutoff for the course was 272/450. All the details about the admission process can be obtained from the official BITS, Pilani Website. There are 5 rounds of selection.

I choose Mathematics for my love of it. There were about 40 people in my course. Classes were usually take place in smaller classrooms and a plethora of electives to choose from. It is an Honours degree and a lot of interdisciplinary courses could also be taken.
