Latest Update: In a recent judgment by Gujrat High Court, the premier court upheld IIMA decision of 50% weightage to the Personal Interview in the  MBA Selection Process. Meanwhile, the apex court also laid guidelines for fair evaluation of candidates. Know More

IIM Ahmedabad was the first Management college of India to be accredited as per European Standards by EFMD. Now it offers 2 year MBA, one year Executive MBA and Fellowship programs. It also offers ePGP as a distance MBA program.

It accepts the CAT score to shortlist candidates for the MBA program for which the cutoff goes up to 99%ile. Foreign candidates having GMAT score of 750 can take admission to the IIM Ahmedabad MBA program.

For the Academic year 2021, IIMA has introduced a significant change in MBA selection Criteria by reducing the weightage of CAT score to 60% from 65%. Earlier, work Experience and Academic profile were marked on a 35% scale. Therefore, it is evident that students having more experience can leverage for extra scores in the new format.

Not only MBA, its PGPX program also requires GMAT score around 700. This program boosts of mature and experienced professionals where the average work experience is close to 10 years (3 years internationally). Also, the average age on joining the PGPX course is 34 years, which is more than IMD executive program (well-known executive program) which is 31 years.

IIM Ahmedabad has EPGP as an option for those who want to pursue MBA in distance mode. For admission CAT Score (3 years) and GMAT/GRE score (5 years) are considered to be valid.

For the Fellowship program you can either apply through CAT website or through official website for which it accepts GATE, UGC/CSIR-NET, or other fellowship exams.

What IIM Ahmedabad looks for?

  1. Consistency in Academic Performance
  2. CAT Percentile should not be less than 80%
  3. Performance in Interview round

IIM Ahmedabad selection criteria filter out the candidates with low academic grades or the ones who have inconsistent overall performance. So what are the admission requirements?

IIMA MBA Academic Requirements:

In this class 10th, 12th and Graduation marks will be considered.

Academic records play an important role in the selection criteria. IIM Ahmedabad gives 30% wieghtage in screening round and 15% weightage in final admission round to your academic record.

Shortlisting Weightage 30%
Final Round Weightage 15%

What does that mean?

Candidate with at least 80% marks in class 10, 12 and graduation will get 26 marks out of 30 in the first stage and 13 marks out of 15 in the final stage.

And if someone has secured 90% or above in Class 10 and 12th with 80% marks in graduation than he will get full marks.

85% Good 30%
80% Average 25%
75% Below Average 20%

Candidate with a consistently good academic record has good chances of getting selected into IIM Ahmedabad.

IIMA CAT Percentile Requirements:

CAT Score is a major factor for selection criteria. Candidates with at least 80 percentile will get calls from IIM Ahmedabad.

Shortlisting Weightage 65%
Final Round Weightage 25%

It has been published in its criteria that candidates must have at least 70 percentile in all sections and overall 80 percentile for getting selected in the initial stage.

CAT Score carries 65% weightage for the first stage and 25% in the final stage. Therefore having good cutoff can pour some advantage to you during selection rounds.

What does that mean?

If you have 80 percentile in CAT. Then you will get 52 marks out of 65 in the first round and 20 marks out of 25 in the final round.

Now let’s check the complete selection criteria for IIM Ahmedabad.

IIM Ahmedabad MBA Selection Criteria 2021:

Step 1: Preliminary Screening of candidates:

CAT will consist of 4 sections i.e Qualitative Aptitude, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning, Verbal and Reading Comprehension. Candidates having achieved the required cutoff will be considered in subsequent stages.

Every IIM sets minimum criteria to select candidates for admission to its various program. But clearing the minimum criteria doesn’t mean that the candidate is selected. Selection will be only considered on the basis of overall cutoff in CAT 2020.

The minimum sectional cutoff for IIMA are as follows:

Category Verbal and Reading Comprehension Percentile Rank (PVRC) Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning Percentile Rank (PDILR) Quantitative Aptitude Percentile Rank (PQA) Overall Percentile and Rank (PT)
General 70 70 70 80
NC-OBC-cum-transgender 65 65 65 75
SC 60 60 60 70
ST 50 50 50 60
PwD (General, NC-OBC-cum-transgender, SC) 60 60 60 70
PwD (ST) 50 50 50 60

Step 2: Calculation of Composite Score

After filtering out the most eligible candidates, IIM Ahmedabad will now assess candidates on the basis of the CAT Score and  Academic profile. The Composite score will help in shortlisting the candidates for Academic Writing Test and Personal Interview Round.

The profiles of candidates will be considered on the basis of “Application Rating Score” which comprises of 4 components, namely

A:10th Standard Score

B: 12th Standard Score

C: Graduation level score

D: Work experience.

So, Application Rating Score: AR= (A+B+C+D).

This total score has a weight of 40% in calculating the composite score, while the CAT 2020 score has a weight of 60%. The institute will further normalize the AR Score by dividing the average of the top 50 AR scores from the applicants' pool.

Note: Normalised AR score of an applicant is equal to their AR score divided by the average of the top 50 AR scores from the applicants' pool.

Ratings Scores for Work Experience

Work Experience is another criteria to assess candidate for admission to PGP at IIM Ahmedabad.

Experience (In Months) Rating Score D
< =11 months 0
>= 12 and <= 31 months MF * (number of months of work experience – 11)
>=32 and <=40 months (40 – Work Experience Month) + 1
> 41 months 0
Work-experience Multiplication Factor (MF)  for >=12 and <=31 months = 0.50

To understand the table, suppose a candidate having an experience in the 12 to 40 months range. Let's assume 24 months of work experience.

So, score will be 0.5 * (24-11) = 6.5. Similarly, candidates having an experience of 36 months of work experience will have a score of [(40-36) + 1] = 5.

Now, a simple composite will be calculated using the given formula

CS(Composite Score)= ARF_CS* Normalised AR Score+ CATF_CS* Normalised Overall Score in CAT

where ARF_CS (Application Rating Multiplication Factor for Composite score) =.40 :

and CAT Multiplication factor for composite score = 0.60

3. Shortlisting for Analytical Writing Test (AWT & PI)

After shortlisting the candidates and calculating their Composite Scores IIMA conducts further 2 rounds of shortlisting for AWT-PI round.

From each of the academic categories (AC), the total number of applicants to IIMA who appear for CAT from SC/ST/NC-OBC/PwD categories is at least 100.

The top 5% in the respective AC(General/SC/ST/NC-OBC/PwD) are refered as ACRC groups.

Candidates will be shortlisted for AWT & PI on the basis of the composite score ‘CS' subject to their fulfilling criteria C1-C3.

Application Rating Multiplication Factor for Composite Score (ARF_CS) = 0.35; CAT Multiplication Factor for Composite Score (CATF_CS) = 0.65

Finally an Upper Limits (UL) on the number of candidates to be shortlisted per RC for AC-1, Ac-2, AC-3, AC-5.

Category Upper Limit (UL) Per ACRC
General 100
NC-OBC-cum-transgender 57

PwD 9

Criteria C1-C3:

C1.

PVRC, PDILR, PQA and PT must not be lower than the minimum cut-offs.

C2.

P ≥ Minimum cut-offs (specific to the category and the stream as shown in Table 7), where P is the average of the percentages of marks scored in 10th and 12th std. examinations.

Stream in 12thstd. General Category NC-OBC-cum-transgender Category SC Category ST Category PWD (General, NC-OBC-cum-transgender, SC) PWD (ST)
Science 80 75 70 65 70 65
Commerce 77 72 67 62 67 62
Arts & Humanities 75 70 64 59 64 59

C3 (Percentage of Marks in the bachelor’s Examination)>= Minimum cut-off percentage, to be set at the 80th percentile of the percentage of marks of the respective ACRC group of the applicant’s who appeared for CAT 2019.

Criteria C4-C6:

C4. PT ≥ 80, PQA ≥ 70, PDILR ≥ 70 and PVRC ≥ 70.

C5.  P ≥ 80 (Science), 77 (Commerce), 75 (Arts/Humanities), where P is the average of the percentages of marks scored in the 10th and 12th std. Examinations.

C6. (Percentage of marks in the bachelor's examination) ≥ Minimum cut-off percentage, to be set at the 80th percentile of the percentage of marks of the respective AC group of the applicants' pool.

Stage 2: After removing the candidates selected in Stage 1 from each category (General, NC-OBC, SC, ST and PWD) the additional number of candidates to be shortlisted for AWT & PI will be selected on the basis of the composite score ‘CS' (see above) subject to their fulfilling criteria C1-C2.

4. Final Selection

Selection at this stage will strictly be based on the shortlisting of the candidates done separately for each category (General/SC/ST/NC-OBC/PwD) on the basis of their ‘Final Composite Score's (FCS). The numbers selected in different reservation categories will be in proportions mandated by law.

The FCS of a candidate who appears in AWT & PI will be computed as follows:

FCS = PIF * Normalised PI Score + AWTF * Normalised AWT Score + CATF_FCS * Normalised CAT Score + ARF_FCS * AR

Personal Interview Multiplication Factor (PIF) = 0.50

AWT Multiplication Factor (AWTF) = 0.10

CAT Score Multiplication Factor for Final Composite Score (CATF_FCS) = 0.25

Application Rating Multiplication Factor for Final Composite Score (ARF_FCS) = 0.15

The normalised PI and AWT scores of a candidate are their scores in the respective field divided by the average of the top 1% scores in the same field respectively.

  1. Details of the candidates shortlisted will be made available on the IIMA website (www.iima.ac.in) tentatively by the second week of January after the CAT results are published.
  2. Shortlisted candidates would also be sent AWT & PI call letters by IIMA.
  3.  No communication would be sent to applicants who are not shortlisted for AWT & PI.
  4. After the AWT & PI round, admission offers are made by IIMA to successful candidates.
  5. The final selection is based on a diverse set of attributes which includes performance in CAT, performance in AWT & PI, academic, co-curricular and extra-curricular achievements, work experience, etc.

Ques. Which of the following is better, ISI Kolkata or IIM Ahmedabad for an economic honours student?

● Top Answer By Aaditya Hari Nair on 07 Oct 21

Ans. Both institutes are excellent in their offerings. The only choice is based on your choice and interest. Following are the factors that need to be considered before choosing one: If you are interested in MBA/ Statistics/ Economics/ Mathematics, then you should go for ISI Kolkata. If you want to work in a corporate job, then IIM Ahmedabad is the best option If you aspire to do a Ph.D., then go for ISI Kolkata After deciding on this, you should also look for the location.  If you're facing issues regarding the fee structure, then ISI Kolkata will be a better option. The institute offers a stipend to pursue MSQE. IIM Ahmedabad, on the other hand, has a very high fee structure Both institutes are esteemed and offer you a dream fulfilled, but it depends on your preference. Read more

Ques. Are the girls living in the campus hostel of IIM Ahmadabad or IIM Indore allowed to go out of campus? If yes, till when and what are the procedures?

● Top Answer By Aaditya Hari Nair on 28 Aug 21

Ans. Yes, the girls living in the campus hostels are allowed to go out of campus at IIM Indore. Most of the students are adults and above the age of 21. They are considered responsible enough to take care of themselves while going out. At IIM Indore, the girls are even allowed to visit the boy’s hostel without any supervision or restrictions of time. However, boys are sometimes not allowed to go to the girl’s hostel. As the campus is situated on the outskirts and is about 16-17 km away from the main city, these are the following ways to reach the main city. Campus shuttle bus: IIM Indore runs a timely campus bus service outside of the campus. You can look up the bus schedule and plan accordingly. The buses also pick the student at the specified stopping points as per the bus schedule and bring them back to the campus. For availing of this bus service, you need to carry your college ID card as it will be checked at the college gates while leaving and returning. The maximum occupancy of the bus is about 30. Personal vehicle or Taxi service: The guards will call the candidate and take the details of the vehicle entering. And while going out, the vehicle number and driving license number of the driver will be noted. Staying past 11:30 pm: The institute provides freedom to their students but also takes care of their safety. Thus there are some time-bound restrictions. For staying past 11:30, you need to take late-night permission from the coordinator of the Student activity council. The college believes in freedom with responsibility.Read more

Ques. Which is better for an MBA in Operations, NITIE Mumbai or IIM Ahmedabad?

● Top Answer By Debdeep Majumder on 10 Aug 21

Ans. Well, it is difficult to try and persuade someone to not join IIM Ahmedabad and join some other institute. But since we are talking about Operations there are some reasons for choosing NITIE. I have a few friends from NITIE and I got to know a little bit about the institute through them. Here is what makes the NITIE stand out. Mecca of Operations - The tag has value. Many major FMCG or Operations Consulting firms offer big roles in the placement drive at NITIE. The legacy of 54 years does come in handy since many recruiters are from NITIE they come with high and great expectations. Here is a brief overview of both IIM Ahmedabad and NITIE Mumbai. Particulars IIM Ahmedabad NITIE Mumbai Total fees 23 Lakhs 12.53 Lakhs Placement percent 100% 100% Highest salary INR 60 LPA INR 50 LPA Average salary INR 14.5 LPA INR 19 LPA Lowest salary INR 12 LPA INR 10 LPA Top recruiters Amazon, Google, Microsoft, CFO, PWC, Mahyco Amazon, Flipkart, Nestle, ITC, Godrej, KPMG, Asian Paints Finally, I will say, IIM Ahmedabad has an international reputation and is somewhat perceived as Harvard Business School of India. You may regret choosing NITIE over IIM Ahmedabad later on. So, choose wisely.Read more

Ques. I am a GEM fresher and have confirmed admission offers from IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta, but have been waitlisted by IIM Bangalore. Which offer should I accept and why?

● Top Answer By Keshav Jindal on 31 Jul 21

Ans. It is quite apparent that if you haven’t met people who actually studied in either of these institutions. That’s why this answer is based on my graduation batchmates who successfully managed to secure a seat at IIM Ahmedabad. Comparing the two IIM Calcutta and Ahmedabad, both the institutions have a big alumni network and claim to be at par. However, that doesn't mean that both are identical or similar because the internal factors matter a lot. Here are some insights about these IIMs you must have a look at before deciding. Although both IIM Calcutta and Ahmedabad would have the same curriculum being IIMs, you will see slight modifications in the course structure for both. You will also notice a huge difference in batch profile which changes each year with the new admission. In terms of placements, you might find a few recruiters who don’t visit all three institutions, but luckily, most reputed and top-notch firms are likely to visit all of them. However, you can see a difference in the sectoral distribution of placements. But the right CV and preparation will help you land your dream job no matter which IIM you choose. As my friends complete their MBA at IIMA, their amazing learning experience and successful job profiles create an inclination towards IIM Ahmedabad. Although all three of them are some of the best B–schools in India. However, in your case, if you want to wait for IIM Bangalore's waitlist to proceed, do check the past years’ records. Check if the waitlists of the past few years have created a huge difference for the waiting candidates. If not, go for any of IIM Calcutta or Ahmedabad without giving a second thought.Read more

Ques. What is the procedure involved when visiting the IIM Ahmedabad campus?

● Top Answer By Nikhil Ranjan on 30 Jul 21

Ans. The process involving visiting the campus of IIM Ahmedabad depends on the purpose of your visit there. If you want to visit the campus and enjoy its scenic beauty alone or in a group, you can just visit the campus directly and the guard present there will ask for identity verification and once they have verified your identity, they will call and inform the authority and someone will be there to escort you through the campus and brief you about it. If you want to visit the campus for some survey or research purpose or decide to study its architecture and build then you need to call the campus authority beforehand and get your permission and submit your identity proofs. You will also have to fix the date and time you want to visit the campus. Also, you can visit the campus if you know someone from the campus.Read more

    Remarks :

It is the best college across India for Management. The admission is a two-staged procedure, where the first one has to take the CAT examination, followed by shortlisting given as per the cluster and then AWT-PI. The college gives a lot of importance to diversity, as it enhances the discussion in the class. They have divided all the undergrad degree into 6 clusters, and accordingly gives shortlist calls (Details are available on the website) with respect to learning, the college follows a case based approach that enables the student to actually apply the concepts we learn. The class is divided into groups of 5/6 students who have to study together in that term, hence we have already discussed the case once before we come to class. It is quite important to have pre-class reflections and post-class reflections along with the in-class. I really liked the entire experience when I had heard about this from my alumni and did wish to learn from the best faculty and Peer group.

    Admission :

Admission is on the basis of CAT exam scores. IIM Ahmedabad organizes its own counseling round, which included a group discussion round and Personal Interview. The selection process was pretty rigorous. I was nervous in the beginning but finally, I got into college and that's what matters.

    Remarks :

IIM, Ahmedabad establishes a standard in terms of academics and the placement offered. The B-School transformed my life and the analytical approach I developed to approach a problem, was all thanks to the college and the faculties. Institute is a perfect amalgamation of academics and extracurricular activities leading to overall development of the student. I would definitely recommend IIMA among other top B-Schools simply for the campus life and some particular faculty members.
