Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) offers a Bachelor of Ayurvedic and Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) course for a duration of 5.5 years. HPU BAMS Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for admission to HPU BAMS 2021 is observed as follows:

  • Candidates must have qualified 10+2 examination or anything equivalent to it from a recognized board of examination
  • Candidates must belong to the background of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and English
  • The applying candidate must have at least 50% of marks in aggregate in Biology, Physics, and Chemistry in their 11th and 12th; 40% if from reserved category.
  • Must have qualified for NEET UG.
  • Candidate must be between age 17-25 not more not less on the date of application and year of admission
  • There is a 5 years relaxation in age for the candidates belonging to SC/ST and OBC.

How to Apply for HPU BAMS?

  • Go to the official website of HPU: www.hpuniv.ac.in
  • Click on the ‘Online Admissions’ option visible on the home page.
  • Select the desired program such as UG/PG/Ph.D. in the drop-down menu that appears.
  • Choose student log-in after choosing the program and click on the ‘New Registration’ option displayed.
  • Register as a ‘New User’ by providing an email and password.
  • Now log in using the user details and begin the application process.
  • Fill in the asked details such as education details and upload the required files such as marks lists and ID proofs.
  • Pay the application fee through a Credit/Debit Card, Net banking, or UPI.
  • Click on the ‘Submit’ option at the end of the application.

The application will be verified and there is a window period in which the candidate is provided with an opportunity to correct any details entered wrongly. Once submitted, the application is verified by the admission committee at HPU, and candidates are filtered through the Eligibility, Admission criteria and the short-listed candidates are contacted for admission.

HPU BAMS Course Details

HPU BAMS 2021 is offered for a duration of 5 ½ years of which the coursework is divided into 11 semesters. 

  • HPU BAMS is a professional year-end exam-based course.
  • HPU offers an internship program for a duration of 1 year after the successful completion of 4 ½ years professional course study period.
  • The course covers Indian Ancient medicine Ayurveda with modern anatomy, medicinal practices, and principles, the principle of surgery, forensic medicine, pharmacology, Ent, botany, and toxicology.

HPU BAMS Program Structure

  • Duration: The 5 ½ years of the HPU BAMS program is divided as follows:

Compulsory Rotatory Internship 12 months
  • Examination: The college conducts the first-year exam as an annual exam and for the following years, it is usually conducted in Sep/Oct. 
  • Students who fail in the first professional exam of HPU BAMS are allowed to appear for the second professional examination but are not allowed to appear the third professional exam unless they pass all the failed subjects of the first professional exam within four chances and a period of a maximum of three years.
  • Students who fail in the second professional of HPU BAMS but have passed all the exams of the first professional will be allowed to appear the third professional exam but will not be allowed to attend the exam of the third professional unless the student passes all the subjects
  • Degree: HPU BAMS degree is awarded to students after the successful completion of the course “Ayurvedacharya” (BAMS). It is given after only passing the final exam and completing the compulsory rotatory internship that is yearlong.
  • Internships: The eligibility for joining the internship program is compulsory qualified in all four professional exams within nine years including all changes that are provided for the years above
  • Medium of instruction: Hpu offers the course in English, Sanskrit, any recognized language, and Hindi.
  • Attendance: All the students are required to attend the lectures and practical classes punctually and the latecomers will not be allowed into the lecture hall. 
    • If any student remains absent from class for 10 consecutive days, their name shall be removed from attendance, and readmission is allowed with a fee of INR2,500
    • However re-admission shall only be done on recommendation from a counselor with a valid reason such as serious sickness, death of a family member, etc.,
  • Scholarships and Stipends: HPU BAMS has very generous scholarships even though the course fee is very low in the college. The following are the scholarships and stipends provided at HPU to the BAMS students
  1. INR 200 per month for each student as scholarship/stipend is given based on 1st professional,2nd professional, and 3rd professional exams based on Poverty cum Brilliancy for Ten toppers
  2. INR 9,000 per year for eligible girl students under ‘Maharishi Balmiki Stipend Yojna’ as per the H.P. Govt. issued from time to time in this regard.

HPU BAMS Internships

  • One year compulsory rotatory internship is present for all the students of the course
  • The program will start immediately after the declaration of the final or the fourth professional results
  • The students who pass their BAMS final Professional exam shall be required to do the compulsory internship and will be provided a stipend from time to time for a year
  • The internship will not be given unless the student registers themselves with H.P Ayurveda and Unani Board as per CCIM and H.P University ordinances.
  • The internship program and time distribution are as follows:
  1. The intern shall receive an orientation that gives the details of the course including rules and regulations. The orientation is conducted in the first three days after the internship begins
  2. Every intern will provisionally require to register themselves with the Himachal Ayurved and Unani registration board and obtain a certificate before joining the internship program
  3. The one-year internship will be divided into clinical training of six months in the ayurvedic hospital attached to the college and six months in PHC/CHC/Rural hospital/District Hospital Civil Hospital. 
  4. State government’s permission for allowing the BAMS graduates in the hospital/dispensary of modern medicine will be obtained in advance.
