Kerala University BCA Admission Criteria

Admission criteria are based on nativity i.e. Keralite or Non-Keralite candidates where Non-Keralite candidates will be eligible for admission only after all the applicants of Keralite origin are ranked and allotted and Non-Keralite candidates are not eligible for any reservations or any kind of fee concession.

Selection of candidates is on the basis of the merit of a candidate according to marks obtained by him/her in the HSC/Class 12 examinations.

There is the process of standardization of marks to make a merit list which is written below: Total Index Marks = Total marks secured for Higher Secondary + Marks secured in Mathematics.

For Example: If the student has secured 1000 marks out of the total 1200 marks and if he/she has secured 170 out of 200 in mathematics, his index marks will be 1000 + 170 = 1170 and these index marks will be used while making the final merit list.

Important Points Regarding Merit List

  • For national-level boards such as CBSE, marks are given out of 500 and therefore, normalize the total marks to 1200 and then add twice the marks obtained in Mathematics.
  • There is a mandatory reservation for 50% of seats for Socially and Educationally Backward Class (SEBC), Economically Weaker Section (EWS) and Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) where 50% is distributed differently according to a type of college whether it is UIT, Aided or Self-financed.
  • There are extra marks added to index marks for making of merit list based on sports quota, servicemen quota, physically handicapped quota, NSS/NCC certificate holders, etc.
  • But, there is a deduction of marks too from index marks as the candidate will lose 10 marks from the total ranking marks for each additional appearance he/she has taken for completing the HSC examination.

Kerala University BCA Cut Off

Most of the colleges have cut-off between 800-1000 as last index mark for General Category where only 6 colleges have cut-off (last index marks) more than 1000 marks and the highest cut-off is set by College of Applied Science, Adoor at 1133 last index marks and similarly, 6 colleges have cut-off in the range of 700-800 marks where lowest is set by Carmel college at 705 marks. Applicants can access the complete cutoff list here.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I choose this course because now the world is fully digital and there is a large need and scope for the IT sector. The faculty in the University for the BCA course is better compared to other courses and the student ratio is very low compared to other courses. Most of the faculties are PG holders and their teaching methods involve digital presentation and also providing practical labs. The entire course is divided into 6 semesters and the exams are conducted at the end of each semester the results are published within 3-5 months of the exams. The difficulty level of passing this course is very low because 30% is the cutoff mark
