Which B-school should I join if I have converted TISS, SJMSOM (IITB) and NITIE?

All three colleges are on top and choosing one among three is not easy. But I can give you some ideas about them as I have friends studying at these institutes. TISS is one of the most reputed colleges for HRM courses in the country. The top two institutes for HR programs are XLRI and 2nd is TISS. XLRI holds first place due to its history and huge batch size and placements. TISS is growing fast but still doesn’t have the same presence as XLRI has. TISS though has the advantage of a very small batch size compared to XLRI, which means lesser competition. And again TISS is at Bombay while XLRI is at Jamshedpur. I would say TISS is still a very good option for aspirants interested in HR. NITIE and SOM are the top two colleges in India for operations and supply chain profiles with NITIE being the clear number 1. Long history and a huge batch size result in lots of senior supply chain managers from NITIE across various companies. On the other hand, though 20 years old, SOM was upgraded only recently, to 120 batch size from earlier 60.Students are getting to the top but SOM does not have the same presence as NITIE. NITIE has more recruiting companies with cushy pay packages as compared to SOM. Although SOM is improving its placement numbers rapidly. SOM does boast of elegant IIT B infrastructure and less batch size and hence, lesser competition due to smaller batches. But NITIE would give you more options in terms of placements. So my preference order will be the following. TISS (HR) > NITIE (Operations & SCM) > SJMSOM (Finance & others) So, choose wisely based on your preferred domain. And in case you are interested in Marketing, both NITIE & SJMSOM are equally good.

How good is the HR MBA Course at SCMHRD? Is it comparable to XLRI and TISS?

Yes, one of my cousins studied at SCMHRD. From his experience, I can definitely say it is a good choice for HR management. Also, having to know some people from these colleges, let me share some details I got to know from them. SCMHRD is probably known to be among some of the top colleges in our country. TISS is a good choice as well. But, when you compare these two colleges with XLRI, the latter tops as it is the best college for HR in India. HR management at XLRI is much better than IIM Ahmedabad as well. If you happen to secure a seat at XLRI, you should take it without any further thoughts. As far as these three colleges are concerned, TISS has the best curriculum followed by XLRI and SCMHRD. If placements are your main concern, packages and profile-wise, XLRI is the best and ranks no. 1 between these three. TISS and SCMHRD are probably tied in this aspect. Which is better, TISS or IMT Ghaziabad?

Based on the specializations of both the institutes, they are leagues apart. The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) is solely meant for courses in social services whereas IMT Ghaziabad is a business school providing PGDM which is equivalent to MBA. Going by your comparison, it is clear that your question is for HRM & LR at TISS which is an MA degree in Human Resource Management & Labour Relations. Although, it totally depends on your pool of interest that which course you want to go for, here are some comparisons to look for : IMT Ghaziabad is renowned for its marketing and it is one of the best colleges for marketing. So, if you are looking for corporate job roles then yes, IMT is the best choice. TISS is renowned for social services and it has clearly made its position among top colleges in the country. If you have budget constraints, go for TISS which has a program fee of about 3 lacs including everything. IMT Ghaziabad is costly with about 19.53 lacs program fee as of 2021. TISS usually has a small batch size of 60-68 students. Whereas, IMT has a huge batch size of 450. The average placement package in TISS is really good at about 21.15 LPA, as of the 2020 batch. Coming to IMT, the average package is about 12-14 LPA due to the huge batch size. At the end of the day, what matters the most is your interest and fervor for the subject. Unless you are very much inclined to the marketing and corporate industry, choose TISS which is economically friendly and also returns with a good placement package.

TISS at Mumbai is a famed institute. Why should a person opt for it? What career and personal goals one should set once he/she joins it? Is this a better choice compared to IIM Shillong?

Comparing TISS with renowned B-schools such as - XLRI (Jamshedpur), IIM (Shillong) will show that it is at par with them. TISS is one of the premier institutes in the Social sciences department. TISS, as a research institute is well equipped. The graduation degree is of standard quality as well, it will be worth your time and money. At TISS, HR is not amongst the highlighted courses. It is Social Work and other public policy and development related courses that are at the forefront. HR, as a course, is parallel to the management side of the education TISS has included it in the course list. Apart from HR, TISS also has another management program which is the Social Entrepreneurship course. Now, let’s sum up the plus points of TISS, as the best-selected option: NAAC Accreditation A (It has been rated as the best university for Social Sciences in India) Faculty Best HR faculty in India; Extremely helpful and encouraging professors. Placement Percentage (2020) 80-90% Highest CTC INR 32LPA. (Its recruitment standards are equal to XLRI PMIR) Average CTC 20.60 LPA Recruiting Companies KPMG, Urban Management Centre, Amazon, CitiBank, etc. Best courses HR; MPH; MHA TISS, when it comes to HR, is definitely a more suitable option than IIM Shillong. However, a comparison cannot be set between the two colleges, in totality. Both of these educational institutes have different specialization courses. Therefore, a common leveling ground is absent. These are the stand-out features of TISS but a comparison with the IIMs is not justified, as they both deal with different subject matters at different levels.

Which one is better: IIM Lucknow or TISS HRM?

IIM Lucknow and TISS HRM are different in terms of course structure and placements. TISS HRM offers better placements in human resource management. Whereas IIM Lucknow provides better jobs in various fields like marketing, finance, general management, consulting, etc. Specialization - HR: If HR is your first priority, then go for TISS. Companies and firms prefer TISS over IIMs to recruit students for their HR vacancies. Although there might be some HR options at IIML, you will not find diverse job profiles of options in IIML. Located in the heart of Mumbai, TISS has fewer students. Thus, it offers good salaried HR jobs to students. Deciding Factors: One must take into account his/her aims and goals, before choosing between these two colleges. The following factors must be taken into consideration while choosing. Both the institutes provide decent salaried jobs to students. Human Resource jobs might offer less salary at the starting and midpoints. However, the salary differs from companies to companies. After gaining a good amount of experience in the field, this difference in companies will hardly matter. You should ask yourself if you want a revenue target-oriented job like marketing and finance or something which has less pressure like HR. HR jobs are less stressful as they don’t have such targets. HR work involves indirect revenue generation. The HR job starts with recruitment and after gaining experience it involves compensation management, training, and development, organization design, etc. Thus, you have to decide if you want direct or indirect involvement in revenue generation. MBA in HR is a specialized degree thus, you may not be able to go to other fields with this degree later in your career. So, take all these factors into consideration before choosing an institute among these two.
