Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936. It was formerly known as Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. TISS aims to be an institution of excellence in higher education that continually responds to changing social realities. TISS has its main campus situated in Mumbai along with three other campuses - TISS Hyderabad, TISS Guwahati, and TISS Tuljapur. TISS Mumbai comprises of two campuses- the Main Campus and the Malti and Jal A.D. Naoroji Campus Annexe — are both located in Deonar in the North-East Section of Greater Mumbai.
TISS Mumbai has been recognized by the University Grants Commission. TISS Mumbai has been accredited by NAAC. It is a Deemed to be University.
Most of the TISS courses are offered at its main Mumbai campus which include PG and Research programme in various disciplines. TISS Mumbai is a host to 12 schools, 6 Independent centers, and 3 resource centers. Admissions at TISS Mumbai are conducted every year through TISS-NET (National Entrance Test) and TISS-RAT (Research Aptitude Test).

The Central Placement Cell (CPC) was established in 2014 to provide relevant employment opportunities to students. CPC gives per-placement training and also campus-corporate training. CPC takes care of the placements for all the schools in TISS (excluding HR and Public Health).
