  • Such candidates must produce the certificates and mark sheets (original and photocopies) as soon as the respective University/Institute publishes the results.

IIM Calcutta MBA Selection Criteria:

Admission to IIM Calcutta is determined on the basis of the following criteria:

Stage I: Minimum requirements of CAT percentiles for PI and WAT

Stage I comprises of the minimum CAT percentile cut-offs which will later be considered for PI and WAT process.

Category Section - I (QA) Section - II (DILR) Section - III (VA) Total Percentile
OPEN ≥ 75 ≥ 80 ≥ 80 ≥ 85
NC-OBC ≥ 65 ≥ 65 ≥ 70 ≥ 75
EWS ≥ 65 ≥ 65 ≥ 70 ≥ 75
SC ≥ 60 ≥ 60 ≥ 65 ≥ 70
ST ≥ 55 ≥ 55 ≥ 55 ≥ 65
PWD ≥ 55 ≥ 55 ≥ 55 ≥ 65

Candidates who secure the above-mentioned minimum percentile in CAT in respective categories will only be considered for calculation of their composite score in Stage II

Stage II: Short-listing for PI and WAT process

The Composite Score is calculated by computing the percentage of marks (Class 10 and Class 12) and assigning weights to different components such as:

  • CAT Score
  • Class 10 marks
  • Class 12 marks
  • Marks in the Bachelor’s Degree
  • Gender Diversity Factor

Marks Scored in Class 10 and Class 12

Class 10 Marks (in %) Points Class 12 Marks (in %) Points
≥80 10 ≥80 15
≥ 75 and < 80 8 ≥ 75 and < 80 12
≥ 70 and < 75 6 ≥ 70 and < 75 9
≥ 65 and < 70 4 ≥ 65 and < 70 6
≥ 60 and < 65 2 ≥ 60 and < 65 3
< 60 0 < 60 0

For the purpose of computing the percentage of marks obtained in Class 10 and Class 12, the aggregate marks of all subjects that appear in the mark sheet would be considered.

The maximum points assigned to the candidates who score 80% or above in Class Xth or XIIth will be 10 and 15 points respectively.

Points assigned to the marks secured in the Bachelor’s Degree

Marks Secured in Bachelor’s Degree Points
≥ 60 15.00
≥ 55 and < 60 10.00
≥ 50 and < 55 05.00
< 50 02.50

Calculation of Marks: The percentage of marks obtained by the candidate in the bachelor’s degree would be calculated based on the criteria followed by the university/institution.

  • In case a candidate is awarded grades/CGPA instead of marks, the conversion to percentage of marks would be based on the procedure certified by the university/institution from where a bachelor’s degree has been obtained.
  • In case the institution does not have any scheme for converting CGPA into equivalent marks, the equivalence would be established by dividing the candidate’s CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA and multiplying the result with 100.

Components and corresponding weights for deriving composite scores

The following criteria is adopted to distribute weight to different components taken into consideration while deriving a composite score:

Components Weights Method of Calculation
CAT Score 56 Candidate’s CAT score/Maximum CAT score x 56
Class 10 marks 10 Based on the points assigned to the score secured
Class 12 marks 15
Marks in the Bachelor’s Degree  15
Gender Diversity Factor 4 4 points will be awarded to promote gender diversity
Total 100 -
  • After deriving the composite scores, the composite cut-off is decided in each category for short-listing the candidate in the Stage II selection process.
  • Candidates to be short-listed for PI and WAT process will be done on the sole discretion of the Institute depending upon the batch size of the incoming batch.

Stage III: Criteria for Final Selection for the MBA Program

The composite score for final selection is derived as per the following criterion. The corresponding weights against each parameter are listed below, which are further used for the preparation of the category-wise merit list.

Parameters Weights
CAT Score 30
Personal Interview (PI) 48
Written Ability Test (WAT) 10
Point awarded for Academic Diversity at Bachelor’s level for Non-Engineering degree 04
Work Experience 08
Total 100

NoteAside from the above-mentioned parameters, for work experience, a maximum of eight points will be awarded based on the length of service. However, only managerial work experience after graduation will be considered.

The final selection list will be based on merit in each category; minimum eligibility in any of the above-mentioned stages of criteria would not automatically qualify the candidate for admission into IIM Calcutta.

Ques. What will the entrance exam format be for a joint degree program in business analytics by IIM Calcutta, ISI Kolkata and IIT Kharagpur?

● Top Answer By Aaditya Hari Nair on 21 Sept 21

Ans. The exam is being conducted for the first time and hence it will not be wise to comment on the pattern of the exam. However, based on the previous year’s exam, below would be my best guess. Discussing last year, there was a maximum of 10 questions in the exam. And all the questions did possess options, but still, you had to write the complete answer else you would face partial grading for the questions. Few topics such as Integration, Differentiation, Quadratic Equations, Algebra, Matrices and Determinants, Probability, and Combinatorics were covered. Since the quant syllabus is more or less the same this year as well, similar types of questions could be expected. If we are talking about Quant then topics such as probability, P and C, matrices, and determinants should be covered thoroughly. You will get to study such topics in your first semester at ISI Kolkata. In Data Interpretation, we can expect questions similar to the ones given in CAT. Basic visualization and inference-based questions should be practiced. As far as verbal and logical reasoning is concerned, it is again not commendable but you can expect questions on a similar pattern to CAT. The exam format for a joint degree program in business analytics by IIM Calcutta, ISI Kolkata, and IIT Kharagpur. I cannot tell you the exact pattern but you can cover all the topics of modern Maths for the exam. It will be helpful to you.Read more

Ques. How was your IIM C/IIT Kharagpur/ISI Kolkata PGDBA interview experience?

● Top Answer By Aaditya Hari Nair on 16 Sept 21

Ans. One of my cousins has recently been to a PGDBA interview, and here are some points he briefly talks about: There were three panelists, from ISI Kolkata, IIM Kolkata, and IIT Kharagpur. My cousin was first asked to introduce himself in fewer words, following which he was asked what eigenvalues and eigenvectors meant. He was thoroughly counter questioned about related topics. The panelists shifted focus to one of the main topics i.e. Statistics and Probability. He was questioned about the definition of Poisson Distribution, to which his reply was rather crisp and plain-sailing. He mentioned, alongside the actual answer, what associated probability mass function meant. They also asked several contradictory questions about the same. Following that, he was questioned for the reason behind why public sector banks were merged. Most essentially, they ask about why countries like China and the USA were interested in the Korean land. Questions like the difference between supervised learning and unsupervised learning; Israeli Palestinian conflict, and analytics were often enquired to him. It is suggested that you prepare the concepts of your course very thoroughly, alongside other important subject areas that are one section of the course you have pursued. Read more

Ques. I am interested in pursuing PGDBA offered by IIT KGP, IIM C, and ISI Kolkata. Have little to no programming experience. Should I pursue this career?

● Top Answer By Yashmeet Grover on 15 Sept 21

Ans. My brother is doing his PGDBA from IIT KGP and he was rather afraid of programming and coding when he started the course. If you're stuck in the same situation, then my only advice is to enroll in the course with an open mind and a desire to learn to program if you don't already know-how.  Coding Experience: There is always a first time of everything. Now there are numerous MOOCs available online that can assist you in taking the initial step. The discipline of analytics (technical side) necessitates solid coding abilities, and therefore if you want to pursue a career in analytics, you should start learning the necessary skills now. Work Experience: It is not necessary to have prior work experience to enroll in the course. However, relevant analytical experience aids in extracting greater value from the course.  According to your assessment of your interests, you have a preference for fields involving mathematics and statistics. Analytical science is an excellent fit in that regard. I would recommend that you go into MOOCs like Coursera, audacity, and your willingness to learn more about this field. You will obtain a better understanding of the field and would be able to decide if this is a good fit for you or not.Read more

Ques. If you had to choose between IIM Indore this year, or IIM C next year, what would you choose?

● Top Answer By Admin on 31 Aug 21

Ans. If you are confident that you can score better in CAT in your 2nd attempt at CAT then go for it. Good academics with strong willpower would be enough for another attempt. Many people try only ABC and excel every year. Getting admission into IIM A, B or C is not easy as a lot of other things are also taken into consideration like your work experience, profile, future aspects. Even after obtaining the 100 percentile, many students don’t even get a call from these IIMs. In this scenario, it would not be considered the best decision to waste one year and go for the IIM Indorenow. Even IIM Indore is an old IIM and concerning placements, a lot of good companies come with very nice packages.Read more

Ques. Which college should I choose? I have got selected at IIM Calcutta and NITIE.

● Top Answer By Keshav Jindal on 13 Aug 21

Ans. There can be no comparison between NITIE Mumbai and IIM Calcutta. In any case, you can only go on to NITIE Mumbai in two varied situations, Choose it if you are enthusiastic about both Supply Chain Management and Operations. If you do not want to weigh the burden of an upcoming loan after the completion of your MBA. Apart from these two, everything you require otherwise is considered better in IIM Calcutta.  Every nook and cranny you find at IIM Calcutta is better than the former.  These include the campus life, placement prospects (especially in fields concerning finance and consulting), extracurricular activities, the exposure you receive, student environment, faculty, infrastructure, the alumni base, and most essentially, your growing prospects. IIM Calcutta can also be a superior choice if you share a fair amount of interest in Finance.  Also the brand value the institute speaks for itself.  NITIE, on the flip side, can only be a good choice if you are interested in Operations and Supply Chain.  But, either way, for General Management and various other opportunities, IIM Calcutta is undeniably better. Read more

The CAT exam application form will be released where you have to pay an application fee based on your category. The exam will be most probably held in December of the year. After the results, the candidates will be given a percentile. Based upon the percentile all the calls will be released by January of the next year. You have to prepare for the PI and WAT. Mostly all the IIM's PI will be held in March-April. In the last week of April mostly the results will be declared as Selected, Waitlisted, Rejected.

Remarks :

The faculty, campus life are really good. As is we say "Joka is an experience" it is 100% true. It is an emotional roller coaster. There are times when we may give up but the Joka tribe is always there to hold you back. The infrastructure of the Hostels can be improved.

The college has a good education system which ultimately helped us to inculcate professionalism along with the right attitude. The college gave me some of the best memories and was considered as one of the best colleges catering to the management program. In addition to that, the course was also good and contains good knowledge about the program.
