IIT Kharagpur has 19 Academic departments, 8 multi-disciplinary centers and 13 schools of excellence. Under the UG domain, it offers B.Tech, Dual Degree (B.Tech+M.Tech), LL.B., and B.Arch programs. Under PG Domain, it offers LLM, Joint M.Tech, MBA, EMBA, MHRM, MMST programs. IIT KGP also offers Ph.D. and PDF courses in over 21 specializations along with M.Sc-Ph.D. and MCP-Ph.D. courses in integrated mode. Admission to the most of programs is done on the basis of national level entrances test like JEE advanced (B.Tech), JAM (M.Sc), GATE (M.Tech) and CAT (MBA). However for LLB and PGDBCA institute conducts its own entrance tests. For such programs, applications will be available online.

Like most Engineering colleges in India, IIT Kharagpur conducts its admission process through a proper counselling session for respective programs.

  • For B.Tech. the candidates must produce a valid JEE Advanced score and participate in JoSAA counselling.
  • For B.Arch, the candidate must appear for AAT (Architecture Aptitude Test) which is conducted along with JEE Advanced.
  • For the M.tech. discipline, a valid GATE score is necessary and the final selection will be done through CCMT counselling.
  • For M.Sc-Ph.D aspirants, a valid score of IIT-JAM is essential and they need to submit their scores for IIT JAM counselling for admissions. Check IIT Kharagpur Cut Off
  • MBA and Executive MBA program are offered at VGSOM, a reputed B-School that falls under the umbrella of IIT KGP’s affiliation. It is located within the campus.
  • Admission to the program is similar to that of its contemporaries- IITs and IIMs. CAT score shall be considered for shortlisting candidates for WAT and PI. Final selection will be based on the candidates’ overall performance.
  • Large number of Experienced professionals have preferred VGSOM, after IIM Calcutta for the Executive Management program.
  • Admission to the Ph.D. and the LLM program is done through a written test followed by an interview. Candidates’ past academic profile is also taken into consideration for the purpose of granting admission to these programs.

Indian Institute of Technology - [IIT], Kharagpur : 39 answered questions

Ques. Which is a better college, IITKGP or NLSIU Bangalore, in terms of reputation and placements?

● Top Answer By Aaditya Hari Nair on 13 Oct 21

Ans. The competition to get into NLSIU is very high due to the merit-based system and they have equally impressive placements. IIT Kharagpur, on the other hand, has a very high number of graduates each year, but they do not get offers as high as NLSIU. But you should be considering which of these colleges would add more value to you. Even if you choose to do an LLB from IIT Kharagpur, you should know that it is the first premier institute for engineering. Whereas NLSIU is one of the best universities in the country for law.  Do not choose a college just because it has better placement, instead focus on which college is better for your career in law. A degree from NLSIU would always hold a better position than a degree in Law from an IIT.  There are so many people that drop out of college just because they failed to research better about their career path and what was good for them. Read more

Ques. What will the entrance exam format be for a joint degree program in business analytics by IIM Calcutta, ISI Kolkata and IIT Kharagpur?

● Top Answer By Aaditya Hari Nair on 21 Sept 21

Ans. The exam is being conducted for the first time and hence it will not be wise to comment on the pattern of the exam. However, based on the previous year’s exam, below would be my best guess. Discussing last year, there was a maximum of 10 questions in the exam. And all the questions did possess options, but still, you had to write the complete answer else you would face partial grading for the questions. Few topics such as Integration, Differentiation, Quadratic Equations, Algebra, Matrices and Determinants, Probability, and Combinatorics were covered. Since the quant syllabus is more or less the same this year as well, similar types of questions could be expected. If we are talking about Quant then topics such as probability, P and C, matrices, and determinants should be covered thoroughly. You will get to study such topics in your first semester at ISI Kolkata. In Data Interpretation, we can expect questions similar to the ones given in CAT. Basic visualization and inference-based questions should be practiced. As far as verbal and logical reasoning is concerned, it is again not commendable but you can expect questions on a similar pattern to CAT. The exam format for a joint degree program in business analytics by IIM Calcutta, ISI Kolkata, and IIT Kharagpur. I cannot tell you the exact pattern but you can cover all the topics of modern Maths for the exam. It will be helpful to you.Read more

Ans. One of my cousins has recently been to a PGDBA interview, and here are some points he briefly talks about: There were three panelists, from ISI Kolkata, IIM Kolkata, and IIT Kharagpur. My cousin was first asked to introduce himself in fewer words, following which he was asked what eigenvalues and eigenvectors meant. He was thoroughly counter questioned about related topics. The panelists shifted focus to one of the main topics i.e. Statistics and Probability. He was questioned about the definition of Poisson Distribution, to which his reply was rather crisp and plain-sailing. He mentioned, alongside the actual answer, what associated probability mass function meant. They also asked several contradictory questions about the same. Following that, he was questioned for the reason behind why public sector banks were merged. Most essentially, they ask about why countries like China and the USA were interested in the Korean land. Questions like the difference between supervised learning and unsupervised learning; Israeli Palestinian conflict, and analytics were often enquired to him. It is suggested that you prepare the concepts of your course very thoroughly, alongside other important subject areas that are one section of the course you have pursued. Read more

Ques. I am interested in pursuing PGDBA offered by IIT KGP, IIM C, and ISI Kolkata. Have little to no programming experience. Should I pursue this career?

● Top Answer By Yashmeet Grover on 15 Sept 21

Ans. My brother is doing his PGDBA from IIT KGP and he was rather afraid of programming and coding when he started the course. If you're stuck in the same situation, then my only advice is to enroll in the course with an open mind and a desire to learn to program if you don't already know-how.  Coding Experience: There is always a first time of everything. Now there are numerous MOOCs available online that can assist you in taking the initial step. The discipline of analytics (technical side) necessitates solid coding abilities, and therefore if you want to pursue a career in analytics, you should start learning the necessary skills now. Work Experience: It is not necessary to have prior work experience to enroll in the course. However, relevant analytical experience aids in extracting greater value from the course.  According to your assessment of your interests, you have a preference for fields involving mathematics and statistics. Analytical science is an excellent fit in that regard. I would recommend that you go into MOOCs like Coursera, audacity, and your willingness to learn more about this field. You will obtain a better understanding of the field and would be able to decide if this is a good fit for you or not.Read more

Ques. Which one will be a better choice for an MSc in maths, IISc, ISI Kolkata, or IIT KGP?

● Top Answer By Aaditya Hari Nair on 03 Sept 21

Ans. It would be better to focus on colleges that offer Mathematics as their core and you must keep technological institutions aside. Thus, IIT Kharagpur should not be considered. Talking about IISc and ISI Kolkata, both are research-oriented institutions and are equally good for taking up MSc in mathematics. But when we talk Maths in specific, then it would be better if you look at ISI Kolkata as your ultimate option.  The institute is specifically oriented towards studies related to Mathematics. You will be given great exposure at ISI Kolkata.Read more

      Admission :

I got admission through JEE ADVANCED 2017. I opted for electronics because it is a growing and challenging field with advanced applications of physics in this jew digital world. This institute is the oldest IIT Of our country with very advanced alumni reach and academic faculty. It has a very sound base of research scholars with huge contributions to researching field and a very promising world rank. The steps are first giving JEE MAIN during April 2017, once we qualify in jee main then top 2. 5L (in 2017) students were declared to be eligible to appear for JEE ADVANCED 2017. This exam was held at various centres all over india involving moderate to high difficulty of questions. Finally after exam, the rank list of all students is declared 1 month after jee advanced exams. This rank list is used for admission to IITs all over india. The process of admission to IITs, NITs, GFTIs, IIITs is done by JoSAA. Students need to register on the JosAA portal and create a priority list of department and institutes of their choice. After selecting and locking the priority list, JoSAA releases the allotted colleges in the first round of counselling, students reach respective counselling centres close to their home towns for registering their choice, after several rounds of counselling process, final list of allotted institutres is declared for all students and respective dates of start of academic process is declared.

      Remarks :

Management is little old fashioned and rigid based on academics more as compared to industry relevant knowledge. Rest of the things are very good in this regard.

      Admission :

I got a rank of 2590 in JEE 2011 (Joint Entrance Exam- one of the toughest entrance examination in the world for High School passouts). IIT Kharagpur, being one of the largest IITs in India had to offer a lot more courses as compared to other IITs. Post the result announcement in May/ Jun 2011, the counselling process started where we had to opt for the courses, which would have been decided basis the merit list preparation on JEE rank. Post 3 rounds of counselling, I was able to secure a seat in B. Tech course for Industrial Engineering

      Remarks :

Overall one of the best breeding grounds for under grad students in the country. Driven mostly with the talented pool of students that reach through JEE. A very good nurturing environment provided by academicians, though a lot of scope in creating a more collaborative and progressive view to create one of the world’s best institution.
