NIT Durgapur was founded as the Regional Engineering College in 1960 to meet the needs of major industries in the region. Since then, it has become a major education for engineering. It was elevated to a National Institute of Technology and given a ‘deemed university’ status in 2003.
NITDGP is the first institute in eastern India to be selected as a lead institute under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Program of the Indian government funded by the World Bank. In 2007, it was declared as an institute of national importance.
In 2019, NIRF ranked it as the 46th best engineering institute in India, while Outlook ranked it 37th in its list of top engineering colleges in the country. NIT Durgapur is an AICTE and UGC-approved, and NBA-accredited institute.
NITDGP has modern laboratories with state-of-the-art technology which have paved the path for quality research by faculty members and students. It has a strong faculty comprising 224 accomplished scholars; 211 of them are PhD holders, and five of them have won reputed national or international awards, such as the DAAD Fellowship, OSA Senior Member, and so on.
NITDGP offers 36 specializations across seven courses: nine under B.Tech, nineteen under M.Tech and four under MBA. In addition, it offers MCA, M.S.W, M.Sc and PhD courses.
Candidates interested in applying to NITDGP for B.Tech need to fulfil certain eligibility criteria. They need to pass 10+2 in the Science stream with 75% marks or above. To be selected, they have to take the JEE-Main, following which they have to go for JoSAA counselling.
Candidates willing to apply for M.Tech should have a B.Tech degree with 55% marks. For selection, they have to take the GATE.
To apply for MBA, candidates need to have a Bachelor’s degree with 55% marks; to qualify for selection, they need a valid CAT score card. For MCA, a candidate requires a graduate’s degree. Though the degree can be in any field, the candidate must have studied Mathematics as a compulsory subject either in 10+2 or in college. For selection, the candidate needs to take the NIMCET.
NITDGP has a good placement record. Recruiters here include the likes of Infosys, Microsoft, IBM and L&T. The highest package offered here was 3.254 million INR, while the average package here is 909,000 INR per year. The B.Tech batch of 2018-19 was 620 jobs offered and 514 students placed.
