What students say about University of Calcutta

Likes

  • The University of Calcutta is one of the best government-aided universities in India, with the best faculty members, where students can gather knowledge regarding their subjects.
  • At the heart of Kolkata, there is a very good environment, good faculty and laboratories, quite good placement, excellent alumni networks, and a sports department.
  • There is also a separate placement committee that invites companies and tries their best to get as many students placed as possible.
  • No, I am not interested in a loan. But a scholarship is too good for me, and I have had a scholarship for 2 years. The SC/ST scholarship was good, and other students were happy with the scholarship.
  • There were sports facilities too. They had an annual sports day. There was a great library with a sitting capacity of more than 100 students. There were three labs with a capacity of 50 students each. There was also a great hall for seminars. Additionally, there were two computer labs.
  • I have no hostel because my hometown is Kolkata. However, the hostel infrastructure is good for all the students from other states. Students are happy with the hostel and also appreciate the university hostel which is also good. I am happy with the hostel and faculties.
  • This is the best college in Kolkata and one of the best in India for food and nutrition.

Dislike

  • Unfortunately, I dislike the course structure because it is not up-to-date. For instance, our department does not teach network systems. Additionally, currently trending subjects like Arduino and IoT are not included. However, once you reach the research level, the condition is not as bad.
  • Its just M.Sc. based, so there are no jobs or placements. Although some companies come, they only hire a few students, usually one or two. Our college does not provide internships. After M.Sc., you can also pursue a Ph.D. from here.
  • Merit cum means scholarships are provided for poor and meritorious students, enabling them to receive a stipend based on their fathers income. Additionally, poor students are granted either a half or full waiver of tuition fees. Financial constraints do not hinder access to education in this system.
  • Food is served twice and is done by external agencies, but its quality and quantity are not good.
  • Negative remarks on the useless canteen and the poor communication facilities as they are extremely bad.

Placement Experience:

From semester 5, students are eligible for the placements. Many reputed companies like HDFC, Amazon, and SBI Life approached the college. The highest package was 4 lakh per annum. The average package of placement is 2.5 - 3 lakh per annum.

Remarks:

The admission process is very simple. There is no entrance exam. You'll be able to take admission through your merit score which will be calculated according to your 12th marks. The admission process is done through an online method. Your name will be called through the merit list. Merit score was very High for the B.Com (Hons.) Course. The Average cut-off for taking admission is 85-90% in your 12th exam. Reserve categories like SC, ST, and OBC candidates can get some relaxation in the merit score. But still, it's above the 80% cut-off.

Placement Experience:

The Placements here are one of the best in the Country. Almost all the top Companies come here for recruiting from all the departments. The Highest package last year in BCom was around Rs 21,00,000 pa.

Remarks:

The Admission process was smooth. There was a marks basis criteria on which cut-offs were given. I got into the college on my merit as I performed well in my board examinations. I don’t think there is any more space for improvement in the admission process as it was very smooth.

Course Curriculum Overview:

First of all, I wanted to study in any college at Calcutta University. Surendranath College is a government college and is only 10 minutes away from Sealdah station. According to Calcutta University rules, semester examinations are conducted every 6 months. The teachers of the department are very responsive to the students.

Remarks:

To get honours admission to this college you need to score at least 60 per cent marks in that subject in the higher secondary exam. You can apply for admission to this college at the college website.

Course Curriculum Overview:

First of all, I obtained 93 marks in Biology on my board exam. I enjoy studying biology. I'm very curious about plants and nature. So I have decided to pursue a career in Biology. We had a total of four faculties in our Botany department and in our batch, there were around 40 students. So the student-faculty ratio was like for every 10 students we have one faculty. But our professors were great. All of them are highly qualified and completed their PhD. Besides lectures, they conduct a few webinars on our subject topics and they have taken practical classes. We had a semester every 6 months. And the initial first two semesters we had to give two papers each. But we had to choose pass subjects. You can choose zoology, chemistry, physics or Maths as a pass subject. Exams are quite difficult to pass once we move towards the 5th & 6th semesters. So any student must have to study very hard to pass.

Remarks:

The course eligibility is based on the higher secondary exam. The college authority does not take any admission test. To study botany Hons students must have a science background with biology as a subject. And as the admission process is complete marks based you must have overall 80% marks in class 12 and in the subject biology you should have over 85 marks to get a chance. The more marks you get the higher your chance of getting a seat. You can find the application form & all other necessary instructions like the merit list, payment page, etc on their college website. The application process generally starts in the month of July right after the HS result. And for botany Hons, the admission, as well as the first year fee, was around Rs 4500. Obviously reservations are available for SC/ST/OBC candidates.

Course Curriculum Overview:

I choose the b.com Hons course because, after completing this course, I want to be a banker, faculty and student ratio is 50:75. Our head of the department's qualification is a master of commerce. the semester exams are very difficult to pass, but the timing of the examinations is perfect.

Remarks:

Overall the admission process is good, I want to tell you that their office room is very small and the working speed of the staff is very slow, please be a little more polite and also fast to your own students. They are the future of your college.
