MAKAUT is a state university formerly known as the West Bengal University of Technology (WBUT). The university is ranked #201 in the NIRF rankings 2022 among the top engineering colleges in India. MAKAUT offers more than 100 courses under UG, PG, and Doctoral degrees. The university also offers PG Diploma and 6 months certificate courses in the fields of Engineering, Science, Architecture, Pharmacy, and Management. MAKAUT has 196 affiliated colleges, 7 schools, and 25 departments. The university has an intake capacity of 1667 seats for all the inhouse courses. For the offered seats MAKAUT has sustained a student to faculty ration at 25:1 for the UG courses and 15:1 of PG courses. Also, the university conducts its own examinations for admission, i.e., CET, JEMAT, and PGET/ WBUT PGET.

Amongst all the UG and PG courses, the two major courses of the university are BTech and MTech. MAKAUT BTech program is offered in 20 specializations. The total intake for the program is 120 seats. Admission to the program is based on WBJEE rank. Candidates acquiring admission to the program must score a rank between 814-2549 in the WBJEE 2023. The total fee for the 4 year BTech program is INR 1.90 Lacs. Another major program of the university is the MTech. Admission to the program is based on GATE or PGET scores. For MAKAUT MTech Biotechnology, the universty accepts only GAT-B score. The cutoff rank for the MTech program through PGET exam is 937. The intake capacity of the program is 198 seats.
