"Architecture at IIEST Shibpur - A Delightful Experience"

Placement Experience :

Students are eligible for placement from 3rd year (B.Tech) and 4th year (B.Arch). However, B.Arch students often do not opt for campus placements which are generic. They usually seek employment options themselves outside. Yet, the average placements in IIEST is impressive, the highest even reaching 40LPA for a select few. I haven't opted for campus placements. I am going to seek a job in Delhi or Mumbai (hubs for good architectural practice) followed by higher studies after the requisite experience.

Remarks :

IIEST Shibpur is a central university and the oldest Architecture degree providing college of the country. The reviews of the college were exceptional, even on CollegeDunia which I religiously followed. I also consulted a few then students of the college to understand whether or not attending this college would be a good decision. Besides, the campus is just 3-4 km away from Kolkata City and had all amenities, including a residential campus. This was my reason for attending this college.

"Studying Architecture at IIEST Shibpur - What You Need to Know."

Placement Experience :

Students can sit for placements after registering with the TnP (Training and Placement Cell) with the help of their departmental heads and year representatives. However, for Architecture Department, the placement opportunities are the same as Engineering students. In short, you can opt for placements in IT companies (if they are interested in hiring you), but architectural firms never come to the college for hiring students. Although campus placements are frail for Architecture students, they can easily land jobs in firms of their choice because of the great alumni network, the reputation that IIEST holds and with the help of their faculty members.

Remarks :

IIEST Shibpur is the oldest degree-awarding Architecture institute in the country. I was aware of the eminence of the institution with respect to the various courses it offers in engineering, science and architecture for quite a long time. Therefore, when I got a chance to get admitted into the institute, I simply did not want to lose it. The college admits students into the Department of Architecture for UG courses through JEE Main Scores (B.Arch Paper II). After all rounds of counselling are over and the student has frozen his choice, the student has to appear for physical counselling as well as admission processes. If not for the pandemic, the processes are finished by mid-July and classes start from end of July. The college has a great reputation, learned faculty, experienced jury for reviews and, above all, a campus to die for. Architecture students must experience campus life at IIEST, which is something I am going to miss the most.

Ques. Should I leave IIEST Shibpur for IISER Bhopal engineering sciences?

Ans. This completely depends on your choice and preferences. The only thing you should take into account is how the course will benefit your career ahead. IIEST Shibpur and IISER Bhopal offer different career paths. IIEST Shibpur is an engineering college and will push you most probably into a technical or corporate line. IISER has a completely different approach. It focuses on scientific research and you will most probably end up in academia or research-oriented jobs. IIEST is a very old and reputed institute in the country and definitely, its placements will be better compared to IISER Bhopal. This decision entirely depends on you. Choose which career path you want to avail yourself and work toward establishing it.Read more

Ans. IIEST Shibpur and Jadavpur University both are quite reputed universities. Over the past few years, the former has improved a lot too. However, choosing JU for your CSE degree will be better. Also, you should note that IIEST offers integrated M.Tech courses. Although IIEST Shibpur is quite reputed, its placement record is not comparable to that of JU. In the recent placement drive at JU, the placement average was 100%. The average CTC offered at the campus was 19 LPA. Apart from the placement, there are also great research opportunities at JU. The transformation of IIEST from BESU, has been quite effective. With time, IIEST can even become better than JU. However, as of now, JU is the better alternative.Read more

Ans. IIEST Shibpur has begun offering an integrated M.Tech for every engineering stream. So, first, it is best to decide whether or not you want to pursue your course at an institute that doesn’t have a long-standing record of producing postgraduates unlike IITs or other reputed engineering institutes. Now, from the academic point of view, there is no such difference between Jadavpur University (CSE) and BESU (CSE). However, the placement reports of Jadavpur University (CS) are currently higher than BESU (now, IIEST) CS. In the last placement drive, the highest CTC offered at JU was 42 LPA. This has been one substantial reason behind why students of IIEST prepare thoroughly for GATE and later opt for IITs. BESU, only recently, has seen a typical upgrade to the status of IIEST, but things still have not drastically altered. The infrastructure of the institute is still undergoing enhancements which still might take a few years from now. It can take a substantial amount of time to improve the academic overview of IIEST. In future, it will definitely attract major recruiters owing to its status as an institute with major national importance. It does not really make a difference which institute you are opting for, JU or IIEST. If you are dedicated, you can secure good opportunities from both of these two institutes. Read more

Ans. Seeing your interest in both branches, IIEST has a wide scope of diverse cultures and you will find many students from all over the nation. IIEST Shibpur offers great exposure in terms of academics as well as extra-curricular activities along with the interactive clubs and fun happening fests. It comes under the Government of India and is one of the NIT. However, Aerospace Engineering is not a trending branch anymore and it was in the limelight a decade ago. To open up more opportunities, you will be required to pursue a Master’s or prepare for the competitive exams to get a decent job. ECE at Heritage Institute is more prominent but being a private college, it is not up to the mark as compared to Aerospace Engineering. The placement opportunities at HIT are not good. Therefore, all you can do is to opt for IIEST, get a decent aggregate, and change the branch from Aerospace to ECE in the second year.Read more

Ques. Which is better, NIT Surathkal for mechanical or IIEST Shibpur for CSE?

Ans. Both NIT Surathkal and IIEST Shibpur are amazing institutes and the departments of the mentioned branches are at their best. The deciding factor here is your branch of interest. If you are inclined towards Mechanical Engineering, you must opt for NITK. If you are more into coding IIEST must be your choice. Another factor to look for if you are not that specific about the branch to study is the institute's proximity to your home. The one which is easily accessible must be preferably your choice. Shibpur is very well connected to all major cities. Frequent industry visits are conducted. NITK Surathkal is located in Karnataka. Their campus is the best. They even have a beach surrounding its campus. Categories CSE at IIEST Shibpur Mechanical at NIT Surathkal Course Fee 5.68 lakhs 5.40 lakhs Highest CTC 29-35 LPA 28 LPA Average CTC 17-18 LPA 10-15 LPA Recruiting Companies Deloitte, Wipro, Infosys, Tech Mahindra, etc. L&T, JP Morgan, IOCL, GAIL, etc. But when we compare placements in the CSE branch of IIEST Shibpur to the mechanical branch of NITK, IIEST Shibpur wins hands down.
