The cost of attendance to pursue any program at the Massachusetts Institute of technology is approximately 73,160 USD. With financial aid programs like MIT scholarships, fellowships, and grants, this overwhelming cost is reduced by almost 60% for international students.

At Massachusetts Institute of Technology, student support varies as per the level of study. While undergraduate students are offered MIT scholarships via a centralized system, postgraduate students are considered for assistantships and fellowships through their respective departments. On top of university aid, students received external sponsors and employment opportunities to cover their educational expenses.

In 2019, MIT awarded student support worth 625.626 USD (5% increase than 2018 funding), which fulfilled the financial aid requirements of 89% incoming students. The details of 2019 MIT financial aid is tabulated below:

Type of support University Sources (in USD) External Sponsors* (in USD) Total Student support (in USD)
    UG Tuition Support 128,365 18,956 147,321
    PG Tuition Support 237,589 63,437 301,026
    Fellowship Stipend 28,509 16,470 44,979
    Student Employment 48,978 83,322 132,300
    Total 443,441 182,185 625,626

*does not include scholarships offered by Non-USA based organizations.

As demonstrated, the university is committed to offering unwavering support through MIT scholarships and fellowships, especially to international students on an F-1 US student visa. Therefore, students are encouraged to explore the Massachusetts Institute of Technology scholarships during the pre-admission process itself.

    MIT Scholarships for Undergraduate Programs

As mentioned earlier, Massachusetts Institute of Technology UG programs, students are offered need-based financial aid. The university considers the following factors to calculate the aid for MIT scholarships:

    • Number of people in the family
    • Number of children currently attending college as an UG
    • Permanent residence
    • Total parent income from all sources, whether taxed or untaxed
    • Taxes paid
    • Unreimbursed medical expenses
    • Private school tuition for younger siblings
    • Total assets

How to Apply for Undergraduate MIT scholarships

Applying for undergraduate financial aid at MIT, USA is a uniform for both domestic and international students. The applicants need to complete the following steps to apply for the aid:

    • CSS Profile: It is a Collegeboard tool used to determine an applicant’s eligibility for the MIT scholarship program. To complete their 2020/21 profile applicants need to provide following documents:
      • Parent’s 2019 income tax statements
      • Bank statements
      • Records of investments
      • Records of untaxed income

In addition to the submission of documents, applicants must answer the supplementary questions. The CSS profile code for MIT is 3514.

    • Parental Tax Return or Income Documentation: Once applicants have submitted their CSS profile, they need to provide their parents tax return statements to Collegeboard's secure IDOC (Institutional Documentation Service) for processing.

Talking about when to submit the applications, deadline for undergraduate MIT scholarships are:

    • Early Action: November 30
    • Regular Action: February 15
    • Continuing Students: April 15

    MIT scholarships for Postgraduate Students

The scholarships and other financial aid options for postgraduate programs at MIT are majorly decentralized and managed directly by individual graduate departments. While a few programs offer partial tuition fee waiver MIT scholarships, graduate students are majorly assisted via fellowships.

At MIT a graduate fellowship provides partial or full tuition fees to international students along with a stipend to cover living expenses. The fellowship amount may be upto 4000 USD.

For a few graduate programs, MIT also awards need-based scholarship programs. However, the aid amount depends upon the applicant's requirement and chosen degree program.

    External Scholarships for International Students

While domestic students are entitled to federal grants and scholarships, such is not possible for international students. If they are unable to secure MIT scholarships and grants, then students will have to depend on scholarships available in their own countries.

These scholarships, funded by trusts, corporate firms, and the government, allow students to pursue higher education in the USA. Such scholarships are essentially significant for postgraduate-level students, as MIT scholarships are limited for masters and doctoral programs.

To study at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Indian students can apply for the following external scholarships:

It is one of the top-ranking universities to study business and finance and as I was applying for masters of France, I applied to MIT along with 4-5 other universities (just to be safe). Getting accepted in such a college was not easy, I worked very hard to get in! The selection process is extremely competitive. I applied to the university through the online application portal, the application fee paid by me was $250.

This was my dream college though I did not have the courage to apply to it then on my parent's motivation I decided to apply to MIT university as well as Harvard. The application charges here are around $150 per application and the process is completely online through the official website.

It is a dream of every student to study at Sloan and what makes the experience even greater is that it is a school of MIT. After completing my graduation I knew that I will submit the application here regardless of whether I will be able to get admission here or not. The application fee was $150 and every process was online.

The Sloan School of Management is under MIT university. That was enough reason for me to join the college if my application is at all selected. However, with very little hope I had filled up the application form and it cost around $150 through the online admission portal of the college.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology had been my dream school ever since I grew interested in the field of chemistry. In the last few months of high school, I applied to the bachelor's of science program in the field of biology and chemistry and having scored good grades helped the online admission process get easier. I paid an application fee of $75.

MIT is the dream of every child in their schooling period but some get a chance to be here and my dedication and hard work helped me a lot to be here. Infrastructure and faculty are also the main reason I have joined. There is no application fee for admission.

Being a part of MIT itself opens many doors of opportunities as it is one of the best schools for an engineering degree. I chose the university because of its rankings. I applied by creating a profile on the official website as it is the only way of applying for graduate programs at the university. An application fee of $75 was also paid by me at the time applying.

One of my friends recommended me this college. I applied and evidently was qualified. Studying at a place from where people like Virgilio Barco, Richard Feynman, and many others are passed out is a proud feeling. Besides this, the college ranks in the top 10 positions every year. These were some of the features of the university.
