Because I got in. Originally, I had planned to transfer to Western Washington University. However, after a campus visit to UW, I was in love (like many) with the campus and decided I at least wanted to apply. After hearing back, I decided I wanted to give it a shot.
Course Curriculum :
Depends. I'm in a fairly new undergraduate program, and I think the staff is still working out the kinks. Not all of my required courses I would say have been as meaningful as they could have been. I don't want to say they were a waste of time, but they definitely could have been more developed and had a clearer structure of what to learn.
Exams :
SAT, ACT. Also multiple AP subject exams for college credit. The AP credit transferred to the AA degree that I received from a community college, and then I transferred to a four-year university.
Placement :
UW has a fairly comprehensive career advising center, so it's very helpful to have that. There are also frequent internship and career fairs held on campus where employers come and recruit students from campus for different positions that they have that are open.
Internship :
Yes! They provide many and have multiple opportunities for students to apply for one or create their own through a service placement. I do not currently receive a stipend for my internship, which is unfortunate. However, I wish I did.
Events :
The University of Washington has many registered student organizations, all which host their own events. UW also kicks off every fall quarter with Dawg Daze, which is hosted by First Year Programs. Dawg Daze has multiple events for the two week period before school starts.
Fees :
Tuition is the biggest fee. There is also a quarterly fee for a quarterly bus pass. The next largest expense is off-campus housing.
Scholarship :
Yes. I received a scholarship from the Department of Communications for my journalism experience. I received the scholarship by first applying online, and then found out I was selected as a recipient and was required to attend an award ceremony.
Examination Structure :
My program of study is fairly discussion and analysis based, so my knowledge is often graded through group work and presentations or essays. I took one class that had exams, and the class had two midterms and a final that was all multiple choice.
Faculty :
Depends. UW's College of Education is home to a handful of marvelous professors who deeply care about the students and institution that they serve.
Hostel :
I worked briefly as a kitchen assistant for an on-campus sorority. If it were affordable, I would have preferred to live on-campus. My biggest complaint against UW is that they do not provide enough housing for all the students that they admit. I think affordable, accessible housing is a big part of student success and UW's failure to provide this directly impacts the student experience.
