AICTE Warns Anna University that not Conducting Exam Arrears can Lead to Consequences

In a move against the cancellation of the student arrears, All India Technical Education Council (AICTE) warned Anna University that it would be constrained to withdraw the varsity approval if the arrears had been cancelled as proposed by the Tamil Nadu government.

The Government has announced that all students with arrears (with the exception of the final semester) who have registered and paid exam fees will be exempted from writing exams and will be promoted.

Currently, there are 4,01,226 engineering students with arrears in the state.

"Of the two lakh students who set out to receive degrees without clearing the exams, one lakh has finished college," said the university officials.

Experts warned that cancelling arrears would bring down the value of hard-earned graduate students. AICTE Chairman Anil D Sahasrabudhe wrote a letter on this subject to Anna University Vice-Chancellor MK Surappa.

"It is surprising that Graduate Graduate students who had failed in different courses in the previous semester have been passed without examination. It is not acceptable to award marks without any examination or graduation of students. Such students will not be recognised by the industry or any other higher education university," said AICTE President in a letter.

Anna University former Vice-Chancellor E Balagurusamy welcomed the action of AICTE and urged the University Grants Commission (UGC) to take such a strong view.

"Only Anna University comes under AICTE. UGC should take serious action because the reputation of more than 10 state universities is threatened by the cancellation of arrears.

Moving to cancel the back-to-back exams would ensure that at least two lakh students with no basic understanding of key subjects would become state engineers, professors said.

Students with one arrear to 62 arrears would have cleared all of them if the decision had been taken and would have reduced the value of lakhs of hard earned degrees, they said.

However, KP Anbalagan, Minister of Higher Education, told reporters that the higher education department had received no letter from AICTE.
