CLAT 2021 Preparation

Strategy for CLAT Preparation

English Language

  • The questions in this section are from 12th standard level.
  • The topic of the passage can vary; it can be technical, scientific topics, or current issues, or historical events of significance, but prior knowledge in these subjects is not required. All information you require will be in the passage itself.
  • Understand the main focus of the passage first, followed by 5W’s- Who, What, Why, When, and Where.
  • Vocabulary questions are of 2 types:
    • General meaning of a word or phrase
    • Meaning of a word or phrase in context of passage
  • Regularly read the editorial sections of reputed newspapers and magazines, especially if written by imminent lawyers on issues pertaining to law.
  • Start your preparation by going through the grammar books of 12th, especially books such as Wren and Martin and clear all your basics.

Logical Reasoning

  • While attempting the passages identify the premises and conclusions, and use it to identify the theme of the passage.
  • Identify the sets of arguments that support each other and contradict each other.
  • Develop a habit of carefully reading each question as some questions can be intentionally misleading.
  • Occasionally, the same passages are used for English and Legal Reasoning. Consider this while preparing.
  • Always practise using the previous years questions and the sample papers provided by reputed sources such as Consortium of NLUs.

Quantitative Techniques

  • Revise all basics from 10th and 12th standard mathematics books and make sure you do not have any doubts in it.
  • Questions may consist of graphs, pictorial representations of data, tables, etc.
  • Make a formula cheat sheet and stick it somewhere you can see it a lot, like in front of your study table. This will help you remember all the formulas passively without putting in much effort.
  • All factual information needed to answer the questions will be provided in the passages. However, it is always beneficial to have some basic legal awareness.
  • Break down the principle into smaller parts keeping in mind the words like ‘AND’ and ‘OR’. Similar case needs to be repeated with facts.
  • Do not let your biases or previous knowledge of law affect your answers. Always answer based on the information presented to you.
  • The passages of the logical reasoning section, legal reasoning and the english are all very similar so keep that in mind while preparing.
  • Practise a legal reasoning passage daily for at least 30 minutes.
  • It is extremely important to read essays and columns by prominent lawyers, judges and other law experts. You can also watch lectures by famous lawyers on YouTube.

Current Affairs & General Knowledge

  • Questions can come from any prominent topic. Therefore it is very important to be aware of Current Affairs.
  • Read prominent, reliable and reputed newspapers and magazines daily.
  • It is also beneficial to watch the unbiased news on various topics.
  • Practise a Current Affairs passage daily.
