On Friday, the High Court of Bombay declared that the final year dental exams (BDS) and postgraduate medical exams at Maharashtra University of Health Sciences will not be put on stay and will be conducted as scheduled.
The Maharashtra University of Health Sciences had scheduled to conduct the BDS and PG medical exams later in August.
A Public Interest Litigation was filed against the decision of MUHS to call students to appear for the examinations in offline mode at the allotted exam centers. The PIL was filed taking into consideration the major health risks involved
The PIL was filed through advocate Kuldeep Nikam, seeking deference of examinations acknowledging the COVID-19 pandemic. The BDS and PG medical exams have been scheduled to be held on August 17 and August 25 respectively.

The announcement for conducting the exams this month got a mixed response with some opposing the decision and some favoring it.
The Supreme Court stated that putting the exams on hold would be unjust to those students who had been preparing for them and were willing to appear physically for them at the exam centers.
The MUHS also supported this claim saying that if students do not give the examinations, they would be unable to continue on the path of building a career. The students would not be able to continue to the next level. It was also stated that it is necessary for students to graduate in order to be qualified to start their professional careers.
The justification for this argument was the fact that the medical students are future doctors and they should be able to physically appear for exams if they want to be able to physically go out and treat patients.
