Protests erupted on campus after the vice-chancellor's remarks during a telephone conversation between him and a student went viral in the form of an audio clip. Students staged protests and demonstrations at different places on the campus demanding that the vice-chancellor resign.

In the audio clip, the vice-chancellor was heard saying, “Mahamana Madan Mohan Malviya planted many mango trees on the campus. If he would have planted some tree of money, we would have given everything for free.”

The vice-chancellor had said that it was impossible to provide free treatment to students due to a shortage of funds. For instance, while the annual electricity bill of the university is 660 million INR, the University Grants Commission has allegedly only granted 600 million INR to the university.
