BIS signs MoU with IIT Guwahati, IIT Gandhinagar & NIT Calicut to Establish 'Standardization Chair Professor'

New Delhi: As per the latest updates, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIT Guwahati, IIT Gandhinagar and NIT Calicut to establish a ‘BIS Standardization Chair Professor’ at the institute campuses. 

This initiative aims to institutionalise its interaction with the nation's top institutions and increase the participation of institutions in the development of standards formulation. It also aims to make teaching Indian standards an essential component of the curriculum.

The BIS Standardization Chair was established for research, development, teaching and training in the nation's field of standardisation and conformity assessment with a focus on the fields of civil, electrical, mechanical, chemical and earthquake engineering. 

In addition to this, the MoU with IIT Guwahati, IIT Gandhinagar and NIT Calicut focuses on project development and management for water resources and renewable energy, infrastructure development, medical biotechnology & nanotechnology and biomaterials among other disciplines.

During this event, Shri Pramod Kumar Tiwari, Director General of BIS, stated that this collaboration between the top academic institutions and BIS would strengthen and enhance the standards formulation activity by supporting R&D projects.

It will further encourage young people to become involved in the standardisation process, and co-organizing seminars, conferences, workshops, symposia or lectures, training, and short-term education programs. 

He shared the importance of working with academic institutions' start-up incubators and incubation programs to develop new standards and ensure that existing ones are followed. 

Adding to the statement, he stated his hope for seamless integration of standards development and technological innovation to promote progress. This step will encourage quality and leadership in instruction and development in the sciences and other areas.

Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director of NIT Calicut; Prof. Rajat Moona, Director of IIT Gandhinagar; Prof. Parameswar K. Iyer, Officiating Director of IIT Guwahati assured commitment towards this collaboration and agreed to join hands with the Bureau of Indian Standards.
