Calcutta University Vice-Chancellor, Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee, has informed on Monday (January 11, 2021) that students can attend on-campus practical classes, however, they need to attend in small batches.
Earlier the Teacher’s Association of Calcutta University had urged VC to resume practical classes on the university campus. The teachers had written a letter asking the university to begin practical classes for willing departments, maintaining all COVID-19 safety protocol.
The letter further reads, “It will be an injustice to the students to again go ahead with the teaching-learning process without holding any practical classes.” As per VC Sonali Chakravarti Banerjee, teachers can begin practical classes in a phased manner to ensure the safety of students. If the teachers are interested, CU will sanitise all facilities.
However, as per the demand of teachers and students, the ongoing semester may not be extended by a month. The VC has pointed out, “We are bound by the UGC’s deadline.”
Earlier, teachers had demanded the same, so that syllabus can be completed smoothly. Online classes for the present semester had begun in December and as per university guidelines, PG semester exams will be held from March 8-26, 2021.

As of now, teachers are concerned about students who are to appear for practical exams, when no practical classes were held in this semester. Even though online classes are ongoing in full swing, practical classes cannot be held online.
Thus, it will be difficult for Calcutta University students to appear for practical exams without any classes held so far. Teachers are of the belief, students who have opted for science subjects will suffer the most.
Contrary to this, UGC had notified for the 2020-21 academic session that universities can continue with an offline-online blended mode of teaching and learning; permitting CU to begin offline practical classes on campus.
