Calicut University Introduces Sign Language Course for Hearing Impaired; Details Here

Calicut University's Educational Multimedia Research Centre (EMMRC) has recently launched CU Sign Language Course 2021 named 'MOOC' (Massive Open Online Course) in order to provide learning opportunities to hearing-impaired people.

Under Calicut University's Educational Multimedia Research Centre's course 2021, the university will provide various open online courses to hearing-impaired students with the help of the SWAYAM online portal. 

CU MOOC 2021, Massive Open Online Course will include a voice-over version, and the course titled 'Forms of business organization' will be available on SWAYAM for all interested students. 

SWAYAM is an online education platform which is initiated by the Government of India. Through the platform, students will be able to learn the course of their choice from the comfort of their homes in COVID-19 pandemic times.

Referring to the initiative, EMMRC director Damodar Prasad said, "Currently, Calicut University is hosting the most massive open online courses in the country, which is 36”.

He further added that almost all the courses which are now available through various digital platforms are now using various spoken languages as their medium of instruction making it hard for to hearing-impaired people to enroll.

"People with hearing ailments follow only visual and sign language, which is rarely available online. As the National Education Policy (NEP) emphasizes developing study tools for specially-abled students, we decided to develop courses in sign language," said Damodar. 

Calicut University Courses and Fees

The course is developed by keeping in mind the needs of students by Dr. Bhavana U B, head of the Department of Commerce, National Institute of Speech and Hearing (NISH), Thiruvananthapuram, and produced by Sajith Kumar Koyikkal. 

Calicut University Sign Language Course 2021 will commerce for a duration of six weeks for all registered students. Students who wish to apply for the online course can now submit their applications till August 31, 2021. 

Students who are from commerce, management streams, and business domains can apply for the course through the official website of the university at https://admission.uoc.ac.in or through SWAYAM’s official portal.
