CAT 2020 to be conducted in 3 Slots: How Scaled CAT Score will be calculated?


Ensuring safety grounds in the wake of Covid-19 has been a priority across all educational institutions in India. Keeping the pandemic in mind, the Indian Institute of Management colleges all over the country have introduced the three shift exam schedules that will be held following all safety guidelines and protocols. CAT (Common Admission Test) is a nation-wide management aptitude exam that is the sole pathway to get into the prestigious business schools in India.

The exam is scheduled to take place on 29th November 2020 and will be conducted in three shifts instead of two as per the revised SOP issued by the Health Ministry of India for conducting national examinations.The exam will be conducted simultaneously in 156 cities all over India and have multiple exam centres in each city. Methodology behind Scaled Score Calculation Process in CAT 2020

This particular procedure is designed to keep balance between the differences and difficulty levels of the question paper set for the various shifts. Since, there hasn’t been any major change in the evaluation procedure, we can consider that the basic concept remains entirely the same.

The segments of evaluation process are:

  1. Calculation of Mean and Standard Deviation of all students.
  2. Calculation of top 0.1% students according to the raw scores.
  3. Application of formula to calculate the Scaled Score.

Step 1: How Mean and Standard Deviation of each candidate is calculated?

For Shift 1 Mean = M1 Standard Deviation = S1 G1 = M1 + S1
For Shift 2 Mean = M2 Standard Deviation = S2 G2 = M2 + S2
For Shift 3 Mean = M3 Standard Deviation = S3 G3 = M3 + S3

Step 2: How Mean and Standard Deviation of all candidates are calculated as a whole?

For Shift 1 + Shift 2 + Shift 3 Combined Mean = M Standard Deviation = S G = M + S

Step 3: How mean raw score of the top 0.1% of the candidates in each of the shifts will be calculated?

Mean of Top 0.1 % Candidates in Shift 1 M10.1
Mean of Top 0.1 % Candidates in Shift 2 M20.2
Mean of Top 0.1 % Candidates in Shift 3 M30.3

Step 4: How mean raw score of the top 0.1% candidates in all of the shifts combined will be calculated?

Mean of Top 0.1 % Candidates in Shift 1 + Shift 2 + Shift 3 M0.1

Step 5: How the Scaled Score of the candidates will be finally evaluated:

Scaled Score For Shift 1

SS1 = G + [(R - G1) x {(M0.1 - G) / (M10.1 - G1)}]

Scaled Score For Shift 2

SS2 = G + [(R - G2) x {(M0.1 - G) / (M20.1 - G2)}]

Scaled Score For Shift 3

SS3 = G + [ (R - G3) x {(M0.1 - G) / (M30.1 - G3)} ]

The following points should be further kept in mind:

All the rankings of the candidates in CAT 2020 will be done according to the scaled scores.

No candidate can get 100 percentile in the exam as R can never be 0.

The CAT percentile is evaluated and can be rounded off up to 3 decimal places. Hence, the highest percentile a candidate can get in CAT 2020 is 99.999 percentile.
