New Delhi: Chandigarh University has been ranked at the top with the highest number of 703 patents filed in the academic year 2021-22, the CGPDTM report revealed.
As per the latest report released by the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs, TradeMarks and Geographical Indications (CGPDTM), Government of India, Chandigarh University (CU) and Sanskriti University jointly hold the top spot for the highest number of patent applications in the nation among universities and academic institutions with 703 applications filed.
For the last three consecutive years, Chandigarh University, Gharuan has been ranked at the top amongst the top three universities for filing the highest number of patents in a year. It has also been ranked 3rd in India for submitting the most number of patents in the field of Information Technology (IT).
A total of 703 patent applications have also been submitted by Sanskriti University. Whereas with 597 submitted patent applications, Indian Institute of Technology is ranked second overall.
Lovely Professional University (LPU) collects third place in the region, with 529 applications submitted, followed by Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC), with 504 applications. However, Shoolini University of Biotechnology and Management Sciences, with 185 applications submitted, is ranked at ninth position. When it comes to filling out the applications for information technology patents, CU is ranked third in India.
During this year, a total of 66,440 patent applications have been submitted in India so far, representing an increase of roughly 13.57% over the previous year.
Speaking about the achievement of Chandigarh University, Chancellor, Satnam Singh Sandhu said that the universities and institutions of higher education play a key role in developing young minds and motivating them to contribute in the sphere of research and innovation, which affects the economic prosperity and worldwide standing of a nation.
In order to make India independent and self-sufficient in terms of research and innovation across several disciplines, including science, technology, and medicine, the university is actively working on this goal and aims to make India rank amongst the top five nations in patent filing at a global level, Satnam Singh said.
Further, Dr. Sanjeet Singh, Dean Research, CU, said that the university has allocated an annual budget of INR 15 Crore to promote enhanced research and innovation on the campus.
In addition, there are over 100 Core Research Groups (CRG) with more than 1500 students and faculty involved in the development of futuristic products and technologies.
Satnam Singh Sandhu also stated that Chandigarh University has over 30 R & D Centres and Centres of Excellence on the campus for providing practical training for enhanced learning and research.
