Universities and colleges in Delhi organized virtual events to mark the 74th year of Indian independence even as the pandemic and social distancing norms continued.
Small-scale flag-hoisting ceremonies were held by Jawaharlal Nehru University and Jamia Millia Islamia.
Delhi University, Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University and the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi also held such ceremonies. Colleges affiliated with Delhi University, such as Delhi College of Arts and Commerce held virtual events to celebrate Independence Day.
The flag-hoisting ceremony of Delhi College of Arts and Commerce took place through the web application and the national anthem was played online. Students recited poems and a short film on nation-builders was screened. Discussions were held on the National Education Policy, Atma Nirbhar Bharat and the need to be self-reliant.
Jamia Millia Islamia organized a virtual poetry symposium on the evening of 14 August. Teachers and officers working in different departments of the university recited poems in six languages, including Sanskrit, Persian, Hindi and English.
The JNU unit of the National Service Scheme held an online competition. The competition involved submitting videos from across India on people who have been social change-makers. The videos will be uploaded on the social media platforms of the university; the ones with the most views and likes will be awarded on 20 August.
The students’ union of Delhi University held virtual Independence Day celebrations throughout the week, which included recitals, debates and quizzes. It also included online events based on the National Education Policy and “independence from colonial education”.
