Conduct Final Year Mumbai University Exams 2022 Online, Urges Joint Director

The Joint Director of Higher Education (Mumbai Division) has taken this decision after several students of Mumbai University took to social media to post their concerns over autonomous colleges intending to conduct exams offline.

Several autonomous colleges in Mumbai decided to hold Mumbai University exams offline, despite the students’ disagreement on it. However, the Higher Education Department has written to these autonomous colleges to hold exams online as Mumbai University has decided to do it.

But the directive is not binding. After two years, city colleges such as Mithibai College of Arts, Narsee Monjee, St Xavier’ College Mumbai, Jai Hind College, and Sophia College for Women have planned to hold exams in offline mode. Opposing offline exams, students of these colleges have approached the higher education minister with their appeal.

Sonali Rode, Director, the Joint Education Department, said that as the university is conducting the exams online, there'll be a disparity in marks, which will not be tested on common grounds. In order to ensure that there is no academic loss of students, the department has urged these colleges to hold exams online.

Further, she said that they cannot be compelled as these colleges have academic autonomy. Even the students have approached the Higher Education Minister Uday Samant, who had directed the department to reach out to these autonomous colleges.

One of the students said that they are fine with offline exams, if the university also agreed to it. But now, they're getting an unfair deal. With comparatively lower scores, they might lose out on postgraduate seats of their choice.

Another student from Mithibai College, said that the academic calendar has been delayed in the last two years owing to the online exam and unlike the online exams where results are released immediately, the offline exams will lead to the delay of Mumbai University results

The student said that all the colleges need to work in tandem during the exams. Even some outstation students raised their concerns over finding temporary accommodation.

Earlier, the university had released the Mumbai University Exams 2022 guidelines for the upcoming exam.

However, the Principals said that the Uniform Statutes framed under Section 72 (10) of Maharashtra Public Universities’ Act, 2016, permits them to evolve methods of assessment of student’s performance, the conduct of examination and notification of results.

Meanhile, the UGC has given them the autonomy to raise academic standards and any such directive cannot be legally binding on them. It is up to colleges to decide whether to withdraw their decision to hold offline exams, based on the letter or not.
