CUET Impact on DU Admissions 2022: Only 1 Student from Kerala Board in Hindu College's Popular Courses so Far

New Delhi: The admission lists of DU-affiliated colleges demonstrate a noticeable change this year, which is a result of admissions based on the CUET 2022 scores rather than Class XII scores. The changes have been reported ahead of a new semester at Delhi University, which begins today, November 02, 2022.

Following the first two cutoff lists released by Delhi University, Hindu College admitted 146 students to its BA (Hons) Political Science program for the academic session 2022-23. Out of those, 124 were from state school boards, including 120 from the Kerala board, three from Rajasthan, and one from Haryana.

Only one of the total 59 students admitted this year is from the Kerala board so far. There are 49 seats authorised for the course and the second round of seat distribution for DU UG Admission 2022-23 is still ongoing,

Last year, one of DU programs with a first list cutoff of 100% for unreserved seats was Hindu College's B.A. (Hons) Political Science program. The program received 102 applications from students who met the cutoff criteria on the first day of admissions, out of which 101 were from the Kerala board.

Since the CUET 2022 was implemented this year, admissions selection is now based on applicants' college-course interests as well as marks secured in the entrance test: CUET. Students who secure top CUET scorers are drawn to Hindu College's B.A. (Hons) Political Science program.

As per the data, 14 of the 51 students who received an 800 on the CUET result named the BA (Hons) Political Science program offered by Hindu College as their top choice.

According to a Professor in Hindu College's Political Science department, most of the students admitted thus far are from CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) schools, while a smaller proportion is from CISCE (Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations) schools.

These two national boards are both recognised internationally. The majority of individuals admitted in the open seats have CUET scores between 795 and 800. Similarly to this, the majority of new admissions at Ramjas College this year are CBSE students.

Last year, the Ramjas College also admitted a significant number of Kerala board students to its BA (Hons) Political Science (100% first cutoff) and BA programme courses.

Fewer students from the state have contacted Maithry, a group of Kerala students at DU this year with questions about admissions, informed Govind, Association's Secretary. But he added that this might be because it was CUET's inaugural year.

Many students claim they didn't have enough time to prepare because this was the first time the entrance exam scores had been used for admissions. Students will need to prepare independently for the CUET because it is based on the NCERT syllabus, which is taught in CBSE schools and differs from the state board syllabus.

This year, there are fewer students from Kerala, especially at the colleges on North Campus for admissions. Only a small number of inquiries from candidates accepted to colleges like Hindu or Ramjas were received, he claimed.

After last year's admissions, a DU panel identified unequal admission opportunities for students from different boards and suggested that a common entrance test be held, conducted either by the university or through an outside agency. This recommendation resulted in a switch to an entrance exam-based admission process.

Till the second cutoff list, the panel had noted discrepancies in the test results of students from the five boards with the highest admissions. The average Class XII score for enrolled Kerala board students was 98.43%, followed by 94.68% for Rajasthan, 92.69% for Haryana 92.33% for CISCE, and 91.3% for CBSE students.

Earlier this year, a total of 114 students scored 100 percentile in at least four CUET 2022 papers, among them only one student was not from a national board. Of the rest of the students, 100 were from CBSE and two were from the CISCE board.
