DU: CM Arvind Kejriwal Asks Union Education Minister to Amend Delhi University Act to Add New Colleges


The Chief Minister of Delhi, Shri Arvind Kejriwal has written a letter to the Union Education Minister of India to amend the Delhi University Act 1922 in order to make way for new colleges and universities in Delhi.

In the letter addressed to Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank,’ Union Education Minister of India, Kejriwal has requested an amendment to section 5(2) of the Delhi University act so that more affiliating universities can be created for students. 

On Friday in a live conference, Mr Kejriwal stated that in the past 30 years no new colleges have been opened in the capital due to the Delhi University Act. He further stated that the act requires all new colleges to be affiliated with DU but it has reached the maximum capacity.

Moreover, the CM also highlighted that every year lakhs of students who clear Class 12 in Delhi are being left behind in the race for admissions.

“Every year, almost 2.50 lakh students who clear Class 12 in Delhi alone and there are many who come from different parts of the country,” said Kejriwal.

“We need to increase the number of colleges and universities to give equal opportunities of higher education to all the students,” he further said.

Importance of Change in Act

The decision made by the CM Arvind Kejriwal has come in light of the DU’s colleges high cut-offs which rises every year.

As per recent updates, Lady Shri Ram College for Women has set 100 per cent cutoffs for three programmes which have resulted in breaking all previous records of DU admissions 

In 2020, a total of 30 courses across all colleges have cutoffs of 99 per cent or higher. While as many as 91 colleges and institutions are affiliated to Delhi University.

CM Arvind Kejriwal mentioned that apart from DU, a total of 127 educational institutions are affiliated to IP University and concluded that both the universities can’t have more colleges affiliated with them and there is an urgent need for a change in the DU Act 1922.
