New Delhi: More than a thousand students from low-income households have so far benefited from Delhi University's fee waiver scheme under the university's financial support scheme, an official said on March 24, 2023 (Friday).

According to a report, 80% of the benefited students attending colleges have had their fees completely waived, providing a benefit that exceeds Rs 1 crore.

As per Delhi University officials, the university has provided the advantages through fee waivers to promote affirmative action. House visits were carried out as part of the selection process after gathering the appropriate data, they noted.

Professor Pankaj Arora, dean of students' welfare, stated, "The university is committed to extending the benefits of equity, access, and excellent education to the financially poor students."

In accordance with this commitment, the university had previously announced a financial assistance scheme that would exempt students from the economically disadvantaged sections from paying for college. This new initiative is a big step in making sure that these students can get a good education without worrying about expense.

The scheme offers a 100% fee waiver to students whose families annual income is less than INR 4 LPA, and a 50% fee waiver to students whose families annual income ranges between INR 4 LPA and INR 8 LPA. Candidates with back and arrear papers from prior exams, however, are not eligible to qualify for the incentive, according to officials.

"The financial assistance scheme, which is a component of the university's centenary celebrations, demonstrates the university's commitment to establishing an inclusive and supportive environment for all the students.

"Du believes that every person has the right to an education, and we hope that this initiative will inspire more individuals with diverse backgrounds to pursue their dreams and ambitions of attending the university and making a contribution in the development of the country," added Arora.

"The university’s dedication to create an open and encouraging atmosphere for all students is demonstrated by the financial assistance initiative, which is a part of the centennial celebrations at Delhi University.

“The central government's mantra, Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas, is also embodied in the initiative, " he added. Yogesh Singh, vice chancellor at DU, came up with the idea and oversaw its implementation.
