New Delhi: According to a university official, Delhi University has formed a 17-person committee to build a centre for "Hindu Studies" that will offer classes on the "history of Hindus" there. The panel will be led by Prakash Singh, the director of DU's South Delhi Campus. However, a member of the academic council questioned whether such a centre was necessary.

There are about 23 universities in India that provide Hindu studies programmes. According to Singh, DU also believed that it needed to develop a centre for Hindu studies. "We don't have a centre for Hindu studies, but we do have a centre for Buddhist studies. We reasoned that we should investigate the viability of founding a centre for Hindu studies," he continued.

He made it clear that the panel's focus will be on determining the feasibility of the centre before proposing courses in line with that. Singh said, "We will first introduce courses in postgraduate and research, and then we may introduce UG courses." The committee will make decisions regarding how many new courses will be offered and whether they will be offered this year or the following. He added that the group also intended to deliver the framework to the academic council soon.

A member of the academic council who wished to remain unnamed argued against the necessity of the centre by asking where the Sikh, Muslim, and other centres were. The university must offer classes for these additional religions as well.

Sadly, we only notice the religious aspect of Hinduism; this is a way of life. We have a long history; religion is merely one component of it. This is what the centre will prioritise, according to Singh.

Prof. Payal Mago, Director of the Campus of Open Learning, Prof. K Ratnabali, Dean of Academic Affairs, Dean of the Schools of Science, Social Science, and the Arts, Prof. Seema Bawa, Head of the Department of History, Prof. Sangit Kumar Ragi, Head of the Department of Political Science, and Prof. Anil Kumar Aneja, Head of the Department of English are additional members of the committee.

The panel also includes Prof. Ranjan Kumar Tripathi, Joint Dean of Colleges, Dr. Jaswinder Singh, Principal, SGTB Khalsa College, Prof. C. Sheela Reddy, Principal, Sri Venkateswara College, Prof. A. K. Singh, Head and Dean, Faculty of Commerce, Prof. V. S. Negi, EC Member, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Evening College, Prof. Aditya Gupta, Department of Philosophy.
