Education Ministry Reveals Only 212 Teachers Hired

New Delhi: The Education Ministry has revealed that a total of 212 new faculty members were hired during the mission mode period at central institutions. As a result of which, more than 6000 teaching seats remain vacant at Central Universities (CUs).

During this time, the majority of the more established and large central universities, including Delhi University, JNU, and BHU, were unable to appoint even a single professor. Despite hiring 835 new faculty members, the Indian Institutes of Technology still have over 4500 vacant positions.

The Ministry of Education instructed all institutions of higher learning to fill vacant seats in mission mode from September 5, 2021, through September 4, 2022. However, despite having approximately 6200 open faculty jobs, the central institutions were able to hire only 212 teachers for a variety of positions.

Many prestigious central universities, including the University of Delhi, Jamia Millia Islamia, and Jawaharlal Nehru University, were unable to fill even a single professor position.

At this time despite hundreds of positions being vacant for years. Further, during the mission mode, not a single faculty member could be hired by the central universities in Uttar Pradesh, Aligarh Muslim University, Banaras Hindu University, or University of Allahabad.

Currently, the Central Universities have around 6028 vacant positions, of which 2154 are general positions, 1543 OBC positions, 878 SC, 520 ST positions, 611 from EWS, and 322 PWD positions.

According to information provided by the Ministry, the institutions followed the Central Educational Institutions (CEI) (Reservation in Teachers' Cadre) Act, 2019 and created separate reservation rosters for each cadre.

During this period, almost 78 faculty members were hired by Dr. Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, 23 by Pondicherry University, and 22 each by Central University of Rajasthan and Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University.

Vacant posts at IITs

As per the Ministry, the IITs hired 835 faculty members during the mission mode period. However, there are still 4526 open positions at these prestigious technical schools. Among the older IITs, IIT Kharagpur hired the most people (106), followed by IIT Bombay (40), and IIT Delhi (47). Meanwhile, IIT Guwahati was able to hire 68 faculty members during the mission mode period, compared to IIT Kanpur's 69, IIT Madras' 29, IIT Roorkee's 40, and IIT(BHU) Varanasi's 52.
