Five Colleges in Assam to get University Status in Next Two Years: Assam Chief Minister

Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has announced that five colleges in the state will be recognized as University after it gets a university status in the next two consecutive years.

During the inaugural session of the North-East Education Conclave, the CM addressed that Nowgong College, Sibsagar College, the autonomous college of Lakhimpur, JB Law College, and Handique College are the five colleges that will be given the university status.

Sarma said that it is easier to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, in states like Lucknow, and Delhi. However, it is challenging to introduce the same in the North-eastern states as there are more than 180 languages in these states.

Assam had been witnessing some progress after the implementation of NEP 2020. A high-level committee has been directed for the implementation of NEP, for which the draft is ready and now they have created a policy for online teacher transfer, and recruitment, Sarma said.

Further, the state will divide the education system the way it has been envisaged in the NEP, during the next cabinet meeting. Also, Assam is planning to establish new universities, he said.

He added that the state had selected five colleges namely autonomous colleges of Lakhimpur, Nowgong, Jorhat (JB law college), along with Sibsagar college and Handique college to be given the status of university in the following two years.

A significant role is played by the central government in the implementation of NEP 2020 in North-Eastern region, he said.

Meanwhile, the Union Education Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan along with others will address the inaugural session of the North-East Education conclave, today, on November 20, 2021.

Earlier, in October, the state was permitted by the National Medical Commission (NMC), to start the eight medical colleges in Lakhimpur with an increase of 1,100 MBBS seats.
