Gujarat Technological University (GTU) and Gujrat University (GU) have both decided to postpone exams which were scheduled to be held in December. The Universities took this decision in view of the increasing number of covid cases in the state.

GTU decided to delay its Winter 2020 exams which were supposed to start from December 10, while GU announced deferment of exams scheduled to start from December 8. The officials of GTU and GU said that they had postponed the PG and UG semester 3-5-7 exams due to a spurt in Covid-19 cases.

However, GTU has decided to go ahead with the next academic session without the exams. Vice-Chancellor, Navin Sheth of Gujarat Technological University said that this decision was taken to hold 90 days of classes as mandated by AICTE guidelines. He further said that the exams will be held whenever the situation improves.

The varsity had previously announced that it was going ahead with the offline exams. However, many students raised an objection to this decision. After that GTU held a plethora of meetings with associate deans and deans to discuss this issue.

Registrar KN Kher, said that everyone in the meeting unanimously decided to postpone the exams due to the increase in the number of Covid cases. As such, the institute decided to issue a notice regarding the postponement on December 1.

To safeguard the interest of the students, the varsity also said that they would be informed of the exam dates at least 10 days in advance. According to Kher, there were more than 4.5 lakh students in UG semester 3-5-7 and PG courses in the University.

When asked if the students will be offered a choice to appear in the online exam, the registrar denied the possibility outright. According to him, holding the exam of 4.5 lakh students in online mode was not viable by any means.

Students from Gujarat University too had made demands to defer the exams. Though the authorities initially refused to delay the exams, they later acceded to the demands of the students.
