ICCR, IGNOU, CHD will collaborate to Provide an Online Basic Hindi Awareness Course for Overseas Nationals

New Delhi: The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), in partnership with the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and the Central Hindi Directorate (CHD), is launching a three-month online Basic Hindi Awareness course for overseas nationals.

On November 3, the officials of the three parties will enter a trilateral agreement. Courses will commence on November 16 and occur twice per week.

The objective of this course is to provide foreign nationals with a foundational understanding of Hindi. ICCR reported that 226 students from nine countries, including Thailand, China, Mauritius, Indonesia, Vietnam, Taiwan, Philippines, and Romania, have enrolled for the course.

In a release clarifying the roles of IGNOU, CHD, and the council, the ICCR explained that IGNOU would register and enrol students in the course. In addition, it shall also be responsible for evaluating and certifying learners.

CHD would be the Ministry of Education's executive body for promoting Hindi and will provide students with course materials. It will also instruct and evaluate students. The ICCR will cover 70% of the tuition costs, while students will be accountable for the remaining 30%.

According to the organisation's statement, "The third widely spoken language globally is Hindi. Hindi, one of India's official languages, is the country's most widely spoken language. As part of its responsibility to promote Indian culture overseas, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) is already involved in promoting Hindi abroad.”

The statement also read, “The ICCR assigns Hindi instructors and academics to India Culture Centers and ICCR Hindi chairs in foreign universities. The ICCR's scholarship programme is also a crucial step in promoting Hindi abroad.”
