IIT Delhi Launches Joint PhD Programme in Collaboration with Chiao Tung University

New Delhi: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has joined hands with the National Chiao Tung University (NCTU) in Taiwan to launch a new joint PhD programme.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been inked between IIT Delhi and NCTU in this regard. The students who will be enrolled in the programme will be required to spend the first half of the program's time at NCTU and the second half at IIT Delhi. Every student will receive two mentors, one each from the two institutes, in accordance with the agreement.

IIT Delhi's B R Mehta, Dean of Research and Development, said that the Institute is now accepting applications for the joint PhD programme. Once an applicant has been accepted at IIT Delhi, he or she will have the option of continuing with the curriculum offered in conjunction with NCTU.

Mehta continued by saying that after the candidate is chosen, the process of matching the student with mentors will soon begin.

The following guidelines are applicable to NCTU students who want to pursue their PhD programme with faculty advisors from IIT Delhi.

According to the latest reports, the students who enrol in this programme may be eligible for scholarships that will pay for all of their research-related costs as well as their travel costs abroad. Students will be given additional scholarships if they choose research topics that are industry-specific.

Further, he informed that there are no restrictions on the research topics that candidates can choose from, but he also mentioned that students who have chosen projects that are industry-specific will be given preference over other students when it comes to selecting PhD candidates and will also be awarded additional scholarships to carry out their research.

He continued by saying that optoelectronics and semiconductors are the industries on which NCTU and Taiwan continue to concentrate. Students who have chosen study topics in this field will therefore have a higher chance of being chosen.

According to Ramgopal Rao, director of IIT Delhi, the number of students enrolled in the programme provided by the partnership is expected to rise above 100 in the next two years. However, the institutes have maintained a target of enrollment of 200 students for the Joint Doctoral Program at IIT Delhi and NCTU.

He concluded by expressing the hope that the joint PhD programme will also garner support from the industries.
