New Delhi: The technology company Continental, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, and the nonprofit start-up Raised Lines Foundation (RLF) have joined forces to help those who are visually impaired board public transportation buses.

As per IIT Delhi, this technology solution is called "OnBoard." RLF was developed at IIT Delhi with funding from the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India, and help from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

With the launch of OnBoard, people who are blind or visually impaired will benefit from having simple access to public transportation, enabling them to go to a wider area. Technology such as OnBoard stands for inclusivity and freedom of mobility.

OnBoard is a solution for the visually impaired. The device consists of a component of the bus that is connected to the electrical system and has a controller and speaker. It includes a user interface that enables users to search all nearby bus numbers and choose the desired bus for an audio response.

The bus depot has programming and diagnostic equipment that assists in programming a set of numbers in a bus gadget so that the driver can choose the precise route number the bus is travelling on. The tool is also useful for diagnostics.

Talking about this achievement, Prashanth Doreswamy, President & CEO of Continental India stated that technology is the key to ensuring that mobility is accessible to all people. Even as we talk about connected, autonomous, shared, and electric mobility in the future, inclusion is frequently ignored, he added.

There are many opportunities now thanks to modern technology, but there is still potential for more. According to Prashanth Doreswamy, "Continental is pleased to work with IIT Delhi and Raised Lines Foundation to assist future development and trials of the OnBoard solution as part of our social duty".

"IIT Delhi has long been a centre of innovation, and we firmly believe that technology has the ability to improve people's lives. Such R&D projects can be strengthened even further through industry-academia partnerships, said Prof. PV Madhusudhan Rao of the Mechanical Engineering Department at IIT Delhi.

In order to make public transportation in India more inclusive, he added, "OnBoard helps go one step forward." OnBoard addresses particular issues related to the accessibility of public transportation for the blind in India.

Using an auditory cue produced by a speaker on the bus, the OnBoard solution allows a person who is visually impaired to board a public bus independently by addressing two obstacles they face: determining the route number of the bus and determining the location of the bus door.
