IIT Gandhinagar Researchers Discover an Effective New Molecule to Treat Prostate Cancer with No Side Effects; Read Details

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar claim to have discovered a new molecule that is used to treat Prostate Cancer.

Sivapriya Kirubakaran, Professor at IIT Gandhinagar who led the research states that Prostate Cancer is the second most commonly occurring cancer in men throughout the world and it needs a hormone called ‘androgen’ to grow. The standard procedure used to treat this type of cancer is hormonal therapy or androgen-deprivation therapy (ADT). Though it provides respite from disease progression, there are high chances this method could fail if cancer spreads to other parts of the body.

New molecule with great Potency

Sivapriya also stated that they have discovered a new molecule called J54 which has shown great potency in cells of mice to reduce prostate cancer completely in 50 days.

The average time taken for prostate cancer to shrink in human male patients is about 18 months, and the time may vary depending upon the size of the detected tumor. She further added that this molecule is the first selective inhibitor of the protein which causes cancer initiation and growth.

J54 Molecule - More effective and no Side effects

J54 combination therapy is targeted to a specific protein, and hence it is effective and personalized for the treatment of a particular patient.

Sivapriya informed that the new molecule does not have any toxic side effects in both human cells and animal cells. It is proved that the new molecule has completely reduced prostate cancer in mice. When compared to the drugs used in other known therapy, the amount of drug used in J54 is considerably reduced.

She concluded, " The efficiency and potency shown by the J54 molecule have created new hope for a faster recovery of prostate cancer with lesser side effects."
