IIT Guwahati Director T G Sitharam Appointed as New AICTE Chairman


New Delhi: As per the latest announcement, IIT Guwahati Director T G Sitharam has been appointed chairman of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). He will now join his new position and serve the council for the next three years.

As per the officials, T G Sitharam will lead the Council for three years or until he turns 65, whichever comes first. According to information officials' notification, M P Poonia, the vice chairperson of the AICTE, and a professor from IIT Kanpur were among the other candidates shortlisted for the position.

Sitharam will succeed UGC Chairman Jagadesh Kumar, who served as acting AICTE Chairman when Anil Sahasrabuddhe was relieved of his duties on September 1, 2021, due to his age of 65. IIT Guwahati now has a vacancy as a result of Sitharam's appointment because his position as director was to end in July 2024.

T G Sitharam was a professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, prior to taking the position as director of IIT Guwahati. He previously held the position of chair professor for the IISc Department of Energy and Mechanical Sciences.

In addition to this, the IIT Guwahati has recorded a 21% increase in pre-placement offers for the academic year 2022–2023. As per the placement data, it has already received a total of 218 pre-placement offers (PPOs) this year as compared to 179 offers made over for the session 2021–22.

Talking about the data, Prof. T.G. Sitharam, Director of IIT Guwahati said, "The huge increase in PPOs this year makes me glad. The PPOs received demonstrate how well the students' diligence paid off. IIT Guwahati extends an invitation to further businesses to come and take part in the hiring of our nation's finest talent".
