IIT (ISM) Dhanbad Inks MoU with DGH to Research Unconventional Hydrocarbon Resources


New Delhi: IIT (ISM), Dhanbad inked an MoU with the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH) under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas to conduct research on Coal Bed Methane (CBM).

The partnership will also facilitate development activities, evaluation of Indian CBM blocks, and studies to improve CBM resource recovery. The MoU covers the spectrum of investigations in unconventional hydrocarbon resources, including shale reservoirs.

The signed copy of the MoU was shared digitally by IIT(ISM) Dhanbad director Rajiv Shekhar and DGH assistant director-general (ADG) (development) Anand Gupta. At the DGH office, Rajeev from the Petroleum Engineering department and Saurabh Datta Gupta from the Applied Geophysics department represented IIT(ISM).

In accordance with the MoU, Upadhyay gave a presentation on the modelling capabilities of IIT and CBM prospect evaluation methodology.

Shekhar highlighted the importance of collaboration between IIT(ISM) Dhanbad and DGH in the development of India's CBM and other unconventional hydrocarbon resources. He also emphasised the significance of coal reservoir characterization in CBM development, as well as the incorporation of the recently built Technology Innovation Hub (TIH) at IIT(ISM) Dhanbad.

Recently, the IIT (ISM) Dhanbad was ranked 26th in the QS World University Rankings 2022 for the mineral and mining engineering discipline, with an overall score of 74.1, and is ranked second in the country in this subject domain.
